SBC Wants Regulatory Break, But FCC Says No
Existing rules prevent telecoms from offering new Internet-based services, claims the San Antonio-based telco.
The telecom asked for an exemption from traditional telephone regulations for its Internet-based services. Requirements such as providing wholesale priced access to competitors do not sit well with SBC and other companies.
Telcos need to take advantage of the Internet to battle with cable companies, who are bundling services like phone, television, and Internet access in one pricing package.
The FCC did not fully rule out a change in regulations in the future. Telcos like SBC have long claimed regulations have prevented them from expanding their businesses and providing high-speed services to customers.
