California Moves Violent Video Game Bill Along

Lawmakers introduce legislation to enforce what is already practiced in the video game industry.

An industry ban on selling certain game titles is not enough for the California Assembly. A bill officially banning the sale emerged from committee and now goes before the full Assembly.

Games sold today display ratings as designated by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. They use rating symbols and content descriptors to describe the potential experiences present in a game.

The measure would impose a $1,000 USD fine each time a merchant sold a violent video game to a child 16 years old or younger.

Though the video game industry opposes the ban, the California measure and similar bills in Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina seem likely to pass, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

Despite the opposition to the bill, it should not have too much impact on sales. While voluntarily not selling mature games to minors, titles with that rating currently occupy five of EB Games top ten selling console titles, according to GameSpot.com.
