Yahoo Shows Off On Video
Search engine wars open another front as the Sunnyvale-based portal company pulls ahead of rival Google in the video search space.
Video search moved out of Yahoo's test beds and into the arms of users everywhere Wednesday.
The new service offers what Yahoo calls the most comprehensive video search available online. The size of the service's index has not been disclosed.
Yahoo uses Media RSS to index videos for search. The new RSS module may be used by anyone, and already has been adopted by a number of podcasters for indexing audio.
As more homes add high-speed Internet access, the demand for video content will increase. Yahoo hopes to capitalize on this and gain market share on search engine leader Google.
Nielsen/NetRatings says Google processes about 47 percent of all web searches, while Yahoo is around 21 percent.
