Microsoft To Offer Technology Licensing
The software company has developed far more technology than it might reasonably bring to market.
Some of the fruits of the Redmond-based firm's years of research and development can now be licensed by small companies and entrepreneurs.
The company announced Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP) Ventures on Wednesday, a program aimed at moving new innovations in technology to the marketplace.
In exchange for part ownership of the company, royalties, or both, Microsoft will provide a business with a piece of technology. A smaller company can focus on a single product and bring it to market rapidly.
Included in the list of available licenses will be ones for facial detection and tracking, for making counterfeit-resistant labels, and for mobile video communication. The complete list can be viewed online.
"Obviously if we can accelerate the speed at which cool technologies reach the market, even if they're not in a Microsoft product, we count that as a success," said David Kaefer, director of business development for Microsoft's intellectual property and licensing group.
