HP Buys Out Nearly 2,000 Employees
Voluntary severance packages find a lot of takers in the company's imaging and printing division.
The packages, part of a restructuring process announced by the company in 2004, were only offered within the one division of the company. Age was not a factor in determining the offers.
A spokesperson for the Palo Alto-based firm said the response to the offer reduces the need for further job cuts in imaging and printing.
US based employees took the majority of the packages, while a few hundred takers were in the company's Puerto Rico operations.
The number of packages offered and the contents of those packages were not disclosed to the media.
HP was recently in the headlines regarding its long-running battle with EMC over patents. Several years of litigation finally came to an end, with HP agreeing to pay or purchase from EMC $325 million worth of product over the next five years.
The company recently debuted several new televisions in New York at the Home Entertainment Expo, touting their Visual Fidelity technologies. The new tech can gauge the ambient lighting in a home, and offer doubled pixel resolution.
