British Try To Top 300 MPH In Electric Car

Sorry folks, it's not a new Monty Python sketch, but a serious attempt to break a speed record instead.

Did you know a speed record exists for battery-powered cars weighing more than 2,200 pounds?

Did you know two gentlemen from England would be at Utah's legendary Salt Flats trying to break that record today?

Between observances of Space Day and Cinco de Mayo, most Americans probably missed this item. But Mark Newby and Colin Fallows won't mind.

No prize awaits the two should the vehicle they designed and built with funds from home equity loans top 300 miles per hour. In the great tradition of inventors everywhere, they did it just to see if it can be done.

The car has no mechanical gears, but does boast two motors that can crank out a combined 500 horsepower.

"We think that at some point in the future, all cars will be electric, and we want to show you can go fast in an electric car," said Mr. Newby, a pilot by trade who will be driving the car. Mr. Fallows, a retired RAF technician, designed the car.

In testing in England, the two managed to get the car to 146 MPH in 1,000 yards. That was the longest and safest distance they could find in their homeland. They feel the test proves the car can beat the speed record.
