PDA Sales On The Upswing
Devices with larger displays and QWERTY keyboard have global appeal through the first 3 months of 2005.
Wireless e-mail still has white-hot appeal, and devices capable of bringing it to users sold in huge numbers.
According to analyst firm Gartner, 3.4 million PDAs sold worldwide in the first quarter of 2005. 2.7 million sold in the similar period last year.
Gartner's figures do not include the sales of smartphones that have similar capabilities to PDAs.
Research In Motion, makers of the ubiquitous BlackBerry device, saw the greatest gains during the quarter. Shipments increased to 711,000 units for the first quarter, and RIM knocked PalmOne behind it in terms of market share for the first time.
And while Dell saw shipments increase by 33%, PalmOne had an awful quarter with shipments falling 26%.
Pricing hasn't deterred customers from picking up new devices. Gartner reports an average selling price of $406 per gadget.
