Sony And Microsoft Create Havoc
Next generation consoles from the two companies, plus a rumored project from Nintendo, cause developers endless headaches.
We know some general facts about the new hardware offerings pending from Sony and Microsoft. They'll be faster than their predecessors with more appealing graphics.
While we as gamers can live without knowing all the specs, game developers do need to have an idea of just what is under the hood.
"It's a horrendous effort in the first year," said Rory Armes, studio general manager for video game giant Electronic Arts in Europe.
The console makers provide the software companies with development kits. Microsoft has sent kits to EA. Sony and Nintendo, well, they haven't quite gotten around to it yet.
Game developers will have to expand their electronic libraries to take advantage of higher-powered hardware. Gamers crave the best experience for their spending dollar.
Real-world or "rag doll" physics will be one feature next-gen gamers will see enhanced. "We want to increase that level of immersion and realism in gaming to people can lose themselves in a game," said Gary Dunn, development director at Codemasters.
Gamers should expect games made in the second year of the new console's life to take better advantage of the hardware capabilities. For the first year, maybe gamers should just rent titles instead of buying.
