Broadcast Flags To Air In July
Anti-digital TV piracy measure goes into effect, aimed at preventing viewers from reproducing and distributing Hollywood classics like "Ishtar."
The Federal Communications Commission mandated the creation of a copy-protection process called the "broadcast flag," for the protection of digital over-the-air broadcasts.
The flag will prevent a user from doing anything with a program beyond making a copy of it for personal use.
Starting in July, technology to recognize the flag will have to be included with digital TVs, tuners, and PC tuner cards.
There have been concerns that the FCC has overstepped its authority by attempting to regulate hardware rather than just broadcasts. The Electronic Frontier Foundation among others have been pressing for a court injunction against implementing the flag.
Hollywood movie companies want the flag in place to help prevent piracy. Without it, the studios would be reluctant to license such classic fare as "Battlefield Earth" or "The Master of Disguise" to broadcast networks for airing.
