ITunes Becomes Tasty Target For Criminals
Widely used digital music subscription software proves irresistible to script kiddies and sophisticated thieves.
According to the information security researcher and trainer SANS Institute, Apple's popular music software was a popular cracking target.
Music players from RealNetworks, recently seen in the news touting its Rhapsody To Go service, and WinAmp shared similar risks with iTunes.
Buffer overflows can occur on desktop or laptop machines running this software. Simply visiting a web site infected with malicious code could lead to an overflow condition.
A buffer overflow happens when a process on your machine tries to keep more data in a temporary storage area, or buffer, than can be held there.
Extra data included in an attack that flows out of the buffer can damage user data or even provide a way for a remote user to take control of a machine.
Users of iTunes and other media players should take care to update their software as recommended by the manufacturer.
