Microsoft Bolstering IE7 Security Features
Beta testers and future users of the next update to Internet Explorer will have to be running Windows XP SP2, though.
One of the concerns Microsoft hopes to address with updated browser security will be phishing scams.
Cross-domain scripting has been a big component of phishing attempts. The new browser will have to recognize spoofed sites and alert users to them.
When Longhorn releases to market, IE7 will run in its own protected space in the operating system. This would have the effect of isolating the program from the operating system and cut down on attacks designed to take advantage of IE's integration with Windows.
But that move won't help against cross-domain scripting, according to Matthew Patton, a network security engineer in Arlington, Va. "Cross-domain scripting, for example, is a problem local to IE, and isolating IE from the operating system doesn't change anything in that regard," he said.
