Handheld Ultrasound Machines Entering Doctor’s Offices
Shades of Star Trek and Dr. McCoy's tricorder, but the devices still measure in at laptop-like dimensions.
Miniaturization, the driving force behind the explosion in technological growth, makes another impact on the medical field.
Standard non-portable ultrasound machines cost upward of $150,000. But portable devices made by GE Healthcare and by SonoSite Inc. cost less than half. The devices offer ease of use and high-quality imaging.
A cardiologist and professor of medicine at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Catherine Otto, is one early adopter, according to the Wall Street Journal. "The best person looking at the images is usually the person taking care of the patient," says Dr. Otto. She can see heart muscle motion and blood flow as well.
