Microsoft To Unleash 64-bit Windows
At the WinHEC conference in Seattle on Monday Microsoft will be launching its 64-bit versions of its Windows operating systems.
The new versions of the operating systems will support both Intel's and AMD's 64-bit processors.
An eWeek article asks if hardware vendors will have 64-bit device drivers ready to support these new versions.
The article says:
"While a significant number of PC components will function under Microsoft's new 64-bit Windows operating system, more specialized devices are being put on the back burner.
According to Greg Sullivan, lead product manager for Microsoft's Windows team, 16,000 devices will support the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, scheduled to be released Monday. A number of PC component manufacturers began publishing their drivers earlier this month."
Apparently Microsoft will also be writing generic drivers for some devices.
