Microsoft Dishes On The Next Xbox
Microsoft corporate vice president J. Allard discusses the next-generation console, the Xbox 360. Fanboys sob in droves.
The words "deliver over a teraflop of targeted computing performance" was the closest Mr. Allard came to disclosing any specs on the Xbox 360 at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco.
One feature Microsoft wants in titles developed for the new platform will be high-def resolution, digital surround sound, and 16:9 screens. Which means gamers will have to have a HD-capable television in order to enjoy the new features.
Mr. Allard emphasized aspects of the Xbox 360 as fulfilling the requirements of a media center. All your digital media can be centralized, and Microsoft wants the new console to be that center.
Nifty features for new games on the Xbox 360 include Gamer Cards, which will allow a player to post information about themselves and their gaming prowess, and custom playlists, where any songs you have on the console's hard drive can be imported into any game. You can bring Metallica's "Kill 'Em All" into Halo 2, for example.
