Apple - Clean Up Your Act
Beloved Cupertino company besieged by protestors, who urge the Mac maker to get the lead out.
Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs defended Apple's environmental record in the face of a recent protest. The iconic iPod, probably the most significant element in Apple's resurgence, draws the wrath of environmentalists over its battery.
Replacing the iPod battery costs $99 USD, and the battery has an approximately 18 month lifespan. Apple acknowledges the presence of a small amount of lead in the iPod batteries and claims to be working on eliminating it.
One protestor with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition went so far as to posit some users would actually throw away their dead battery iPods rather than spend the money to replace them. The battery's price tag is about half that of the iPod, depending on model. Given the popularity of the iPod, widespread trashing of the devices doesn't seem likely.
Mr. Jobs points out that in 2001 Apple started a takeback recycling program: "Last year alone we (Apple) took back and recycled over 1500 tons of our equipment."
