Traffic Signals Get Mixed Reviews
A survey by the Washington-based Institute of Transportation Engineers blames bureaucracy for long waits at red lights.
It's not just you. Drivers all around the country are frustrated by inefficient traffic lights. Travel delays and increased pollution result from this lack of effective signal programming and coordination.
"While traffic signals do turn green, yellow and red, they are not operating as efficiently as they should," says Shelley Row, the group's associate executive director. "The traffic changes during the day. (Agencies) need to be able to time the signals differently at different points during the day. "
The survey estimates a cost of nearly $1 billion USD per year if traffic signals across the country were properly monitored and coordinated.
