AMD Dual-Core Opteron Prices Revealed
As Intel and AMD prepare to clash over the dual-core processor throne, information concerning each party's dual-core entry continues to eek out.
Yesterday saw the news of Intel making their Pentium Extreme Edition 840 dual-core processors available for public consumption. Because the AMD dual-cores will not be available until April 21, this announcement gives Intel the distinction of making it to the market first.
This game of one-upmanship continued today when a Taiwan-based motherboard manufacturer leaked price information concerning AMD's dual-core Opterons, which was first reported by Digitimes.com. According to their report, the lower-level AMD dual-cores will be priced in the same neighborhood as the high-end, single-core Opterons:
The entry-level Opteron 865 processor will be priced at US$1,514, the same level as the high-end single-core Opteron 852, while the 870 will be priced at US$2,149 and the 875 will be priced at US$2,649, according to the motherboard makers.
Digitimes also offers a comparative table concerning AMD's pricing structure.
Another interesting tidbit concerns the chip speeds of the upcoming dual-core Opterons. Reports indicate the Opteron line will be shipped with speeds of 1.8GHz, 2GHz and 2.2GHz, which makes them slower, processor speed-wise, than the current high-end single core AMD processors.
However, because dual-core processors can "split" information during its processing phase, average users probably won't notice the difference, speed and performance-wise.
