Microsoft Tries To Steer Asian Government Away From Linux

According to a recent report from a research group, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer at an Asian Government Leaders Forum in Singapore claimed that Linux violates more than 228 patents.

This is disputed by the Linux community.

"Open Source software does not today respect the intellectual property rights of any intellectual property holder," Ballmer told the group. "Some day, for all countries that are entering WTO, somebody will come and look for money to pay for the patent rights for that intellectual property."

"We recommend to all governments that they not get emotionally involved in preferring either software that comes from commercial companies or Open Source software," he commented. "We think the most sensible policy for most governments to take is a policy of neutrality, picking the software for a given application that actually makes most sense relative to the government's needs," he said.

"In the market where Microsoft is, there's a lot of competition," he said. "We compete with Unix and we're doing very well because the Windows (market) share has increased every year. It's out there; it's something we compete against."

"We think our software is far more secure than open-source software. It is more secure because we stand behind it, we fixed it, because we built it. Nobody ever knows who built open-source software," he added.
