Study Of Fortune 100 Web Sites Reveals That Less Than 10 Percent Use SEO Effectively

Oneupwebmtoday released a new white paper outlining its study of Fortune 100 Web sites and revealed that less than 10 percent use search engine optimization (SEO) effectively. And, more than 40 percent aren't using SEO at all.

The 2004 study also compares results to another Oneupweb study performed in 2002 and while numbers have improved, these global leaders are allowing other companies to usurp them online. The study titled, "Global Leaders Risk Losing Market Share," is available at Oneupweb.com under "Articles."

"If any of these companies were ignoring advertising or customer service, you'd expect the stock to tumble," says Lisa Wehr, President of Oneupweb. "These companies that have the best reputations, the greatest resources and the smartest talent should be using every opportunity to build their businesses and their brands."

In 2004 there were 9 well-optimized sites as compared to 3 in 2002. Oneupweb expected that number to have grown at least 10 times to more than 30 companies over the last 2 years. If the optimization of FORTUNE 100 corporate sites had kept pace with the SEO industry growth, then moderately or well-optimized sites should exceed 95 corporations by now.

If Oneupweb updates the study next year, it expects that all the Fortune 100 would use search engine optimization on their corporate sites.

"Not only will big brands begin to notice a decline in market share, they will experience brand erosion. Customers expect to see the names they know as a dominant force in the places they live. More and more, they're living online," explains Wehr.
