Microsoft Delays 64-bit OS Again
Microsoft is delaying the launch of their 64-bit Windows, again. Originally scheduled for an early 2004 release, Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 has also been delayed until the first half of 2005.
There are already a couple of 64-bit chips on the market; both AMD and Intel currently have them. The new chips are able to crunch more data per second and have better access to memory. Applications written for 32-bit machines will still work on the new chips, according to theregister.co.uk.
The delayed release date benefits other operating systems, like Sun's Solaris or Linux, which already run on the new chips.
With Microsoft having such die-hard fans, it's plausible that users would wait and upgrade when Microsoft can utilize the new 64-bit chips.
