3D Camera On iPhones In The Future?
Apple has filed a patent application for 3D camera technology that would fit inside an iOS device. The patent application was filed in September and published by the US Patent & Trademark Office yesterday. The abstract refers to "three-dimensional image senseing devices configured to capture an image including one or more objects.

The Cost of a Disengaged Employee
I've had a lot of interesting discussions lately around employee collaboration and one of the topics I've been having conversations around is employee engagement. Now before I go into more detail I want to stress that engagement in this case doesn't refer to activity on a platform such as submitting ideas, commenting, sharing status updates or anything else of that nature. That's typically something that some vendors in the industry like to focus on but in my opinion it's wrong. Activity is not the same thing as engagement. In this case engagement refers to employees being passionate about the work they do and the feeling of being connected to the company. So the question becomes, is engagement a fundable business case for employee collaboration? (even though the benefits of employee collaboration extend far beyond just engagement).

Feds Deciding What To Do With Megaupload Data
Carpathia Hosting, the hosting solutions company that was used to store the data on the former file-sharing site Megaupload, made a statement this week indicating it has been unable to figure out what to do with the Megaupload data on its servers, and is seeking a federal ruling on the matter. The data has been kept in a legal and financial limbo since the site was shut down by authorities in January. Carpathia is still bearing the cost of hosting the data on its servers, yet is unsure of the legal ramifications of deleting it.

Thoughts on Mobile Security and Applications
Note: I wrote this for a client last summer who was looking at a banking industry application. The application was poorly written, and I hope that they have since fixed it. It makes an interesting concept that last summer we were talking about banking and smart phones, then to see a number of these issues crop up in the news since then. Internal Knowledge Markets: A Framework for Success
The quest for uncovering internal knowledge within an organization has been around for a very long time and was one of the early goals of knowledge management. Hind Benbya and Marshall Van Alstyne address this issue again through their MIT Sloan article, How to Find Answers Within Your Company. As they write, the challenge of locating internal knowledge on a specialized topic exists in any large organization. The larger and more segmented the company, the harder it gets to match people to problems. They go on to quite Lewis Platt, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, "If only HP knew what HP knows, we would be three times more productive." I have heard this quote by others CEOs going back to the at least the early 90s. So what do Benbya and Van Alstyne bring that is new to the table?
