Prescient Releases the Social Intranet Study
Prescient Digital Media will be officially releasing their report on the Social Intranet Study at the Intranet Global Forum conference in NYC, Nov 9-10. I had a chance to look at a preliminary copy and there are some interesting findings. The study examines social media use on corporate intranets, and the magnitude, use and popularity of social media by employees and executives. It is based on a survey conducted between late May and early June 2011 by Toby Ward, Prescient Digital Media, in association with the IABC Research Foundation. The findings indicate that there is rapid adoption of social media on the corporate intranet in the past year. Directory:

How deeply do you respond to customers in public?
Recently, I wrote a post that recommended, "Don't be afraid of fake reviews," to help business owners know how to respond to an angry post in social media. To make a long post short, my advice was to always treat angry reviews as legitimate (not assuming it is faked by a competitor, for example), because responding that way is best whether the review is fake or not. That advice was questioned by one correspondent, who asked, "How deeply do you respond in public?" What he wants to know is how to practically manage a conversation in social media, which is a very good question. Directory:

CMO's are at the Crossroads of Customer Transactions and Engagement
Digital Darwinism is the evolution of consumer behavior when society and technology evolve faster than the ability to adapt. At the intersection of relevance and obsolescence is the ability to recognize opportunities for change based on shifting consumer behavior and the subtle coalescence between emerging and disruptive technology. Businesses must realize that change is taking place today with or without them. And, to what extent varies from company to company. But without an understanding of how technology and society are evolving and how decisions are influenced and made, businesses are either left to make decisions in the dark or change simply for the sake of change. We all know how difficult, if not nearly impossible, it is to change. We also realize that once we do begin the inevitable process of transformation, the distance between where we are and where we need to be is not expeditious in any sense. In the era of digital Darwinism, the journey toward evolution and revolution is in fact, the destination. It is perpetual. Directory:

Why Your Business Needs A Story
Word of mouth is all about story telling. If people are not talking about you in the marketplace, it's because you have not given them a story, which is worth sharing. Today, I am going to recommend you change that! Directory:

Are Paid Links Still an Effective Link Building Strategy?
Paid links, also referred to as "rented" links, have been around since Google's rise to fame at the beginning of this millennium. Google hates them and yet the very reason they exist is Google's own fault. And with all the measures Google has put into place to try to devalue them and even penalize sites who sell and/or buy them, the golden question is, "do they still work?" In short the answer is "yes!" However before you go out and take advantage of this proven strategy, proceed with some caution. Directory:

Why You No Longer Need a Blog
Despite the title of this post I happen to think that blogging as a business marketing tool is very much alive, but not in the same sense that kicked off what might be called the golden age of blogging. (Wonder if that period will make the history books?) Directory:

Evidence: Print Is Not Dead
One of the most important decisions made in B2B marketing centers around choosing the right media (print, online, social, events, pr, tv/radio etc) to deliver your message. The question each year is how much of your budget do you assign to each category. Overwhelmingly marketers are being bombarded with the notion that print as a media is becoming a less relevant part of the mix. Directory:

Confusion As A Usability Defect
As a software engineer, you should always be looking for the location of the next defect or at least clues that something is wrong. The problem is that most developers have been trained to wait for feedback from the QA team. In many cases, the QA team is following a script or has been trained on how to use the system, so some clues get lost in the familiarity. Directory:

4 Ways To Cover Your Events With Social Media
For most PR pros, promoting events through the media is a core skill. Most of us, at one time or another, have had to pitch the media to "cover" our client's events. And, that skill continues to be relevant today. But, with tools like blogs, smart phones and online video and photo-sharing tools, brands no longer need only the media to cover their events. Understanding and Building Relationships with B2B Customers
According to Stephanie Edwards, writer for MyCustomer.com, no matter what your job may be, interaction with customers is inevitable. To her, the word customer applies to more than just the "end-user." In a business-to-business environment, customers are categorized in three ways: external versus internal customers, intermediaries versus end-users, and valuable versus not-so-valuable customers. In order for a business to be successful, it must recognize the importance of customer service, both internal and external. Directory:

Thai Floods Seriously Disrupting Global Supply Chain
Over the last few weeks, reports of the damage done by the monstrous floods in Thailand have flooded news feeds across the web. Many people have been swept away by the flood waters and the property damage bill has already risen well above a billion dollars. One of the largest impacts, however, is on the global supply chain, seeing as thailand is Southeast Asia's second largest economy. Thousands of global companies have been forced to shut down production of products made in the country until the flood waters recede and the damage can be repaired. Some of these companies include: Directory:

When Social Media and the Workplace Collide
Managing employee's use of social media is certainly a tricky area that employers are dealing with today. According to a recent study by DLA Piper, one third of employers have disciplined employees for something posted on a social media site. The research also found that 21% or employers had to give their employees a warning for posting something derogatory about a colleague or about the business itself. Despite this only a quarter of the businesses within the study have a social media policy. That, in itself, is a huge problem. Other findings in the study include: Directory:

The Future of Work Is Learning
As a result of John Tropea's wonderful blog post from yesterday, which I have blogged about over here, there has been also quite an interesting and rather refreshing conversation developing on the side over at Google Plus around the topics of business processes, BRP (Barely Repeatable Processes), the role of traditional hierarchies and structures in today's work environment while mixing and mingling with a networked organisation and where learning fits in there altogether. Some fascinating stuff in there, for sure! And one of the various reasons why I keep digging quite a bit G+ over other social networking sites. The depth of the conversations has been like no other so far! And it's thanks to those conversations themselves how one keeps bumping into golden nuggets like the one shared yesterday by Dennis Callahan on that very same thread around "The Future of Work". Choosing A Minimally Viable Co-Founder
If you're starting a company, one of the most important decisions you'll make early on is the selection of a co-founder. Some might advocate just "going it alone" because finding a great co-founder is hard and fraught with risk. It is hard and it is fraught with risk. But going it alone is harder - and riskier. Startups are very challenging and having someone to share the ups and downs with, to be a great sounding board for ideas and to just help get things done is immensely valuable. Directory:

Content Marketing Done Right
Companies are jumping on the content marketing bandwagon in increasing numbers, investing in new content for articles, newsletters, whitepapers, blogs, and video to better attract and engage customers. Social media and networking offer an ideal channel for promotion but many marketers chase such tactics as a crap shoot vs. developing a body of content that grows and builds momentum over time. Social Media's Impending Flood of Customer Unlikes and Unfollows
There's an old saying that carries renewed meaning these days: Give the people what they want. Brands are furiously creating profiles in social networks such as Facebook and Twitter in the hopes of building engaging communities with customers and giving people what the brands think they want. The main activity in this effort is to spur consumers to "like" and "follow" a brand's Facebook and Twitter streams. But are these companies developing effective campaigns to build engagement and give the people what they want? From where I sit, I'd say many are not. If businesses are unable to change course, a very real - and likely very painful - lesson lies ahead. Once-willing consumers will soon become reluctant to connect with brands or will completely sever social ties to brands once they deem the connection fruitless. Directory:
