Social Business Forum Highlights
Once again, I am on the road on to another business trip. This time around to Boston, MA, to attend and present at *the* Enterprise 2.0 event of events. Of course, I am referring to the Enterprise 2.0 Event, a.k.a. #e2conf. So over the next few days you will see how this blog, once again, is going to go a bit dormant, as I doubt I would have some spare time to keep writing some articles; you know how it goes for these kinds of live events, face to face social networking will trump all attempts and efforts to go virtual this week, at least, for me, so I think I'd rather focus on attempting plenty of live tweeting while the event takes place, reporting further on the various sessions I will be attending, and then on my way back home, and seeing how I don't have any other business trip coming up any time soon I will do a proper catch up on the blog about the event posting another series of highlights entries. But, for now, I thought I would go ahead and leave you folks with that other article from the series of the Social Business Forum event that took place in Milan a few days ago, and which I was due one last update. The remaining breakout speaker sessions and one final keynote. Thus let's go ahead with it. Let's do it!

Is Twitter Text, Speech, or Something New?
I read an interesting article in the Neiman Labs blog, Is Twitter writing, or is it speech? Why we need a new paradigm for our social media platforms.   It asks the question: Is Twitter writing, or is it speech? It clarified the reason for this question as we treated these two forms of expression quite differently. Text is seen as stable and more permanent and this has legal implications.

Three Areas for Achieving Scalability
One of the greatest concerns today among IT staff involved with the internet is the scalability of their web applications. For some companies this can be a show stopper. Finding the right tools and having the right skills are not always easy to come by. MongoDB's Growth Into The Enterprise
NoSQL is still not well understood, as a term or a database market category, by enterprise IT decision makers. However, one NoSQL vendor, 10gen, creators of open source MongoDB, appears to be growing into enterprise accounts and distancing themselves from competitors. If you're considering, or curious about, NoSQL databases, spend some time looking at MongoDB.

The $1 Million Specialization Question
Of all the small business marketing issues that I have spoken with colleagues or clients with, there is one that seems to come up with regularity. This so-called million dollar question is around the tricky topic of whether to specialize or talk about your services or products more broadly. On the plus side, if you make it publicly known that you focus on a particular service or product - you are likely to get customers interested in that. The flip side argument is that by specializing, you may be limiting the potential of your business by unfairly "pigeonholing" your entire business into what may just be one small aspect of it.

The Problem with Social Media Monitoring Tools
Social media monitoring is a critical aspect to any well thought-out social strategy implementation. Many practitioners often question whether or not today's tools justify the spend and, even more importantly, what tools should be used for their company's specific situation. The honest truth that most vendors don't want to talk about is that mosta tools fall short on delivering what they promise. From my experience testing and using 20 + different tools over the course of the last 3 years, this is simply the case.

2011 To Be the Worst Year for Security Breaches
So far this year millions of user accounts have been compromised, and millions of dollars spent in cleaning up the messes. Several other articles are writing about this, saying that 2011 is set to be the worst year ever for security breaches. Online security is certainly not keeping pace with the growth in the amount of data stored online. The mounting number of breaches should alarm all security managers to implement better practices.

An Overview of Using Encryption in Application Development
Anyone staying even remotely connected to the news knows that the internet security breaches just this year have surpassed any other. Many of these breaches were elementary attacks--SQL injection, manipulating URLs to grab data being passed in plain text (yes, Citigroup was passing data through the URL), and the like. Though some attacks are sophisticated, like the one that compromised 40 million RSA keys to major banks and DoD contractors, most attacks can be defended by implementing encryption in a few basic ways.

Even more replace carrying laptops to events such as my friends Thierry Hubert and Luis Suarez. Tablets' portability, convenience, connectedness and application portfolio make them very attractive.  Now they are being used beyond the office in fields including construction, manufacturing, and retail as they offer more than smart phones in many ways.

Jack Wolf is Co-Recipient of Macaroni Prize
The Macaroni Prize of 2011 (the Nobel Prize for IT) goes to Irwin Jacobs and Jack Wolf. The Macaroni Prize is unrelated to the fact that many in the tech geek community are experts in macaroni and cheese preparation. The Marconi Prize is "awarded annually to individuals whose scope of work and influence carry on the legacy of Guglielmo Marconi, recipient of the 1909 Nobel Prize for his pioneering achievements in wireless technology." Particularly Jack Wolf was instrumental in the development of data storage and transmission through the years.

Can Cloud Computing Elevate the Role of IT, Making It More Strategic?
Here is an interesting study by IDG that found that cloud computing is enabling a more central role for IT in shaping business strategy and driving innovation. The research polled 200 IT managers in the U.S. and Europe. The vast majority (96 percent) believes that the primary role of IT has changed over the past five years, and 71 percent feel the trend to continue over the next two years.  While 54 percent of the survey participants acknowledge the current value of IT is largely defined by its role as owner and operator of IT infrastructure, they believe within two years, the primary value of IT will become managing the IT supply chain. Half feel that the cloud is contributing to this change.

PDF to HTML5 Conversion
When we decided to investigate the possibility of HTML to PDF conversion, we looked at HTML5 to see whether it could be used to represent the sort of rich content found in PDF files. We have rejected previous versions of HTML and XHTML because they did not have the market support or the features. These were 4 main areas of concern:

Possible DNS Hijacking in phishing Attack on Gmail Accounts
Gmail accounts including some government officials and Chinese activists were recently compromised by a phishing attack. These attacks are not typical--they are spear phishing attacks where the emails are tailored to the person receiving them. The email is typically sent from a person the victim knows well and is disguised as originating from a legitimate Gmail server, possibly through DNS hijacking. Who is to blame for the attacks is still unclear.

GNOME 3 Expands Appeal of the Linux Community
With Windows 7 and Max OS X making advances in desktop design, it was inevitable that GNOME follow. Yet, instead of the typical Windows-like model most desktop environments follow, GNOME 3 resembles more closely that of OS X (as even Windows has done in some ways). The new GNOME has mixed reactions within the Linux community, but is hitting big with Windows and Mac users.

Is There Still Enough GNU in Linux to Call It GNU/Linux?
Richard Stallman and by extension the Free Software Foundation have long argued that because Linux owes much to GNU, it should be called GNU/Linux and not simply Linux. On his blog, Pedro Côrte-Real, analyzed the source code of the Ubuntu "Natty Narwhal" release in order to gauge how many lines of code is purely GNU software, and how many did not originate from GNU. The evidence is strikingly against GNU's claims of deserving credit and recognition in name.

Global, Local, Personal
Over the course of the last couple of years I have taken the chance to blog, every so often, about one of my favourite video series that has surely changed the perception of the real impact of the Social Web, not only within the corporate world, but also within our own society as a whole. Of course, I am talking about the Did You Know? series of video clips that keeps re-surfacing every now and then. One other interesting outcome of those clips is the good amount of spin-offs that abound all over the place on the Web, like today's inspiring video that I thought I would share over here to kick off another week at work. It's all about going Global, Local, Personal.

Have You Started Running Your Marketing By The Numbers?
I once ran into a famous public speaker who had grown rich from one speech, delivered flawlessly, over and over again for years. It might appeal to you as an easy way to make a living, but it doesn't really appeal to me. I like constantly moving on to new ideas, not rehashing the same one over and over. But there is one subject that I have been talking about in various forms since 1999 when I first brought it up at IBM, and there seems no sign of stopping. It's about making digital marketing decisions based on metrics. No matter how long I've been discussing this subject, it feels like there are always more companies that need to hear the message.

Social Business Forum 2011 - On Collaboration
As I have mentioned in a blog post a couple of days ago, on June 8th I will be participating in the upcoming Social Business Forum 2011 event in Milan, Italy. And as a way to introduce my breakout session on the topic of "Organisations or Communties?" I mentioned a recent interview I did with Roberto Cobianchi "On Collaboration: Interview with Luis Suarez (Part One)", where we talked at length around the topic of virtual collaboration, online communities, and the role social networking tools are playing within the enterprise. The interview was divided in two different parts and yesterday, Roberto published the second part under "On collaboration: interview with Luis Suarez (second part)".
