Tablet Development Starts for Google Chrome OS
While Google is seen primarily as a web-services company, they've started their way into the realm of operating systems. First, the company conquered the smartphone arena with the deployment of the open-source Android project - now on version 2.3, codenamed Gingerbread. Android is the most popular OS for smartphones as of early 2011, and the market share seems to be increasing. However, Google is also pushing hard to get into the tablet OS market and into laptop/netbook operations. Directory:

Ubuntu Unity Keyboard Shortcuts & Mouse Gestures
Some of developers have adopted tiling window managers or make use of the Compiz Grid plugin in order to gain more control over the windows in day-to-day graphically programming desktops. While Ubuntu Unity's new, simpler, graphical approach may deter developers from adopting it for their desktops, by coming to grips with Unity's new keyboard and mouse shortcuts, it proves to be a powerful method of organizing and manipulating your workspace. Windows 8 Build Leaks! Oops?
It seems like only yesterday when the latest version of Windows (Windows 7) was released, covering up the various flaws that Vista included. You will see that computers on the market now come with a mandatory version of Windows 7, instead of having the choice of either Windows XP or Windows 7, because Windows 7 is now starting to become a dominant operating system within the PC world. This will help to start eradicating Windows XP, because software manufacturers are beginning to lessen the amount of support they provide for Windows XP drivers. Directory:

cpp-netlib 0.9.0 Released!
After the one-week beta period for the 0.9.0 release, I'm happy to announce that the official 0.9.0 release is now available for general availability at the Github project downloads page. This 0.9.0 release is the first version of the library to be submitted for review to the Boost C++ Library project. Most changes that happened from the beta to the official release involve adding debugging information to critical parts of the server and client implementations as well as documentation and Boost.Build system updates. Look to Yes to Breeze Through Dialog
For true professionals only, the command is part of the GNU Coreutils and expected to be installed on most all Linux systems. The command both lets you get what you want done when you know exactly what you want to do and also, with it, you can stress-test your processors, and even spot-check fatal hardware issues by keeping the system busy. It may seem simple at first glance, but the yes command is there for professional users that know exactly what a given action will do and does not have to interactively babysit the process. The Curation Economy and The 3C's of Information Commerce
Several years ago I had the privilege of working with Steve Rosenbaum, author of Curation Nation. Back then Steve was already vested in the future of online curation and his grande conquête was playing out with Magnify.net, a realtime video curation network. At the time, he was also a staple at some of the tech industry's most renown conferences sharing his vision for social, video, and curated content. As Steve was completing his new book, he asked if I would write the foreword. At the time I was finalizing the new version of Engage! and as a result, I couldn't make his deadline. But nonetheless, I was inspired to write an honorary foreword that I've held onto to celebrate the official release of Steve's new book. Directory:

What Is Important To Your Customers?
Imagine this scenario: Company XYZ has developed a great business creating products and services, developing marketing programs that explain the features and benefits of those offerings and making sales. The mix of SEO, advertising and newsletter is focused on explaining the solutions offered with the intention of educating and persuading prospects to buy. This is the way it's been done in the past and it's what current marketing programs are based on. Pretty common right? Directory:

First Look At Information Builders
I recently got a briefing from Information Builders, an independent business intelligence (BI) and enterprise information integration/management (EIM) vendor founded in 1975. They sell their BI and EIM solutions separately, though they are increasingly selling these solutions together. They have 1,350 employees and 12,000 customer sites as well as a strong OEM portfolio. They find the combination of BI and EIM increasingly powerful as companies move to more real-time analytics. They focus on being number 1 for customer service, partnering with their customers and being innovative in products. Recent expansions include China, Africa, Scandinavia and Italy. They have clients across all verticals. Directory:

The Dangers of Doing What Works
Why is it that in the enterprise 2.0 and social CRM (and probably many other) spaces that we always try to offer a prescription to organizations problems based on what other organizations have done? We always hear about blanket statements such as, "there has to be a center of excellence to manage these efforts," "the customer relationship can't just be owned by sales," "you have to be social internal first and than external, "insert blanket statement here." Smart PR People are Using SmartTags
Have you heard of Smart Tags?
According to Wikipedia, the original use of Smart Tags was a selection-based search feature found in later versions of Microsoft Word, and beta versions of the Internet Explorer 6 web browser. Smart Tags are now being used in many other ways: one is QR (Quick Response) codes and they're proving to be really useful in social media monitoring. Directory:

The Games Businesses Play with Customers
As a child, you most likely played two very popular playground games, dodge ball and four square. If you're an adult who is also an early adopter of emerging mobile applications, chances are you play them once again. Measuring Economic Impact of Using Cloud-Based Services: Google Apps
This post picks up on the theme from yesterday's post. In May 2010, Google commissioned Forrester to examine the total economic impact and expected return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by switching from legacy email and productivity solutions to Google Apps. The report is now out. As most of you know, Google Apps is a cloud-based messaging and collaboration platform that includes mail, calendaring, IM, as well as Web-based collaborative documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and sites. I have used it on several projects and it seems to work fine as a free SaaS alternative. This is especially true for efforts where a commercial cloud-based collaboration tool is not available for whatever reason. Directory:

What We Learned from the Google Tags Experiment
Just when as I was writing a blog post about Google Tags, Google announced that it's discontinuing this form of advertising. Is Social CRM for Real?
Paul Greenberg, an expert on CRM, took time out to keynote the Radian6 user conference, Social 2011 (where I get my turn to speak this afternoon). After writing 800 pages on Social CRM, Greenberg's not yet sure if it's for real, which is similar to my far less informed perception.
