Using Evernote As An Online Filing Cabinet
Like all business owners I know, I've got more to do than time to do it. Without a system to stay productive I would get very little done. I'm often asked to reveal what tools and tactics I use to get more done and that's what today's post is all about. Directory:

Are You Ready To Solve A Crisis?
What constitutes a crisis? Discovering that someone has left a review saying they saw a mouse at your restaurant is certainly disconcerting. But is it a crisis? No. The social media monitors in your organization need to have a mutual understanding of what is a real crisis and what the subsequent escalation procedures are. Directory:

Creating A LAMP System
Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP are constituents of a LAMP system (from time-to-time you may see PHP replaced or included with Perl/Python). LAMP is a modern, free, foundation that can be used to power everything from basic web pages to sophisticated web applications. Below I will go through the steps to install these components. Getting Your Local Business Top Local Listing
Did you know that in 2008, 82% of local searches online resulted in a phone call, site view, in store visit or immediate purchase? This has no doubt increased along with the popularity of local listings and highlights the need for your local listing to be in that prime position - above your main competitors. Directory:

why You Need To Move From Fee Sensitive Customers
Are you looking to attract more clients or customers right now? If you are, here is a very powerful piece of advice, contained in just 2 words. Excellence sells. The massive majority of your competitors do not offer excellence. They may be average, good or even very good, but few businesses offer genuine excellence. Directory:

How To Beat Your Large Competitors Through Local Search
I've been spending a lot of time recently looking at local search, and discussing its importance with dozens of small businesses at the events I speak at. One discussion keeps coming up that I believe is terribly misguided. Small businesses think that their only competition in local search will come from other small businesses. Directory:

How Communities Work In Social Business
When you talk about social business you can't help but bring up the C-word. We all know what I'm talking about right? Yes, communities! Now, when most people or organizations think of communities they actually think of customer communities, however there is more than one type of community that organizations need to think about. Evaluating Risks For Supply Chain Initiatives
I just finished reading "The New Supply Chain Agenda," by Reuben E. Slone, J. Paul Dittmann, and John T. Mentzer which is a great book for anyone interested in supply chain management. One of the chapters in the book talked about evaluating risks for supply chain initiatives and I thought the model they used makes perfect sense for the social business space. It's not overly complicated and if enterprise organizations can use this framework for multi-million dollar supply chain initiatives then it should work just fine for organizations getting involved in social business. I'm going to modify it in the near future but here is the basic framework. Directory:

Why Generic C Programming Has Not Taken Off
I thought about the subject a little more and tried to look into myself and what was stopping me from learning generic programming earlier in my C++ programming experience. One recent interview I had still sold C++ as an Object Oriented Programming language, which was surprising to me because it was only half-true. I knew better than trying to correct the interviewer, but that's a different thing. After a little introspection, here are a few reasons why I think GP has had a hard time getting into the mainstream. Directory:

How To Make JPedal Your Default PDF Viewer
Once java is installed on your machine (see previous post), you can setup JPedal. How you setup your directory structure is up to yourself. I placed the JPedal jar file and associated libraries in /home/feq/programs/jpedal (feq is a name I made up on my computer). Provided you place the correct paths in the shell script, it doesn't matter where these files go. Directory:

Don't Forget About the Mac App Store
Looking around the site, there are countless references to mobile apps, iPad apps, Android apps, and so on. I really had to do some digging to find anything relating to desktop apps. There's even a Mac App Store out there to use! It's easy to see why desktop apps aren't as heavily featured; the mobile space is what's hot right now. Directory:

Mid-size Businesses Ready To Move To The Cloud
According to a recent survey over 60 percent of respondents in the mid-size business space say they are ready to look to the cloud. Many are already using virtualization but only 4 percent are using the cloud now to back up data. In addition, 63% say they are using 10% or less of their applications on a SaaS platform. So this projects a major shift in the mid-size business IT architecture. Directory:

Does Your Company Have A Brand?
There was a time when I mentioned the word brand to small business and they would shrug their shoulders at the idea. We don't have a brand, that's big company we stuff. We have a business and we busy ourselves trying to build some name recognition, sure, but we don't really worry much about branding. Directory:

Microsoft Has A CRM Offering Worth Looking At
I'm not saying Oracle or Salesforce.com should be completely worried just yet, but they should be keeping an eye on Microsoft's cloud-based CRM service - Microsoft Dynamics. An event was held in Redmond, WA which saw the unveiling of Microsoft's new CRM solution. Microsoft Dynamics will be available in 40 markets, in 41 languages, with a price point of $34 per user per month. Directory:

Improving Your SEO Through Better Content Management

Understanding How Web Analytics Work
Not too long ago there was an interesting thread on the Yahoo Web Analytics Forum that began with the question: "Why does testing work?" As any child knows (or soon learns), with "why" questions, good answers are surprisingly hard to come by. What seems obvious often turns out to be complicated and obscure. Directory:

Why Should You Be Investing In Paid Search?
At a recent Webinar on search marketing, I received a plaintive question from a participant. She had listened carefully to all my advice, but practically wailed into the phone, "My CEO does not believe in paid search. What can I do?" If you've run into this situation, you needn't be as worried about it as she was. Directory:

How Intranets Could Look in 2015
Here is another in a series of session notes for KM World 2010 and Enterprise Search Summit 2010. I attended the session, Intranets in 2015 led by James Robertson, Managing Director - Step Two Designs. Here is the session description. "How can we deliver great intranets if we don't know where we're heading? This powerful presentation outlines a vision for intranets in 2015, describing a day-in-the-life of how staff will work. Going beyond the technology aspects, this session explores the "enterprise experience" that we should be providing to staff and how to start delivering it today." Directory:

How Can You Identify Your Ideal Customer?
It's been said time and again that not all customers are created equal. The sad truth is, regardless of your need for new customers (and the almighty dollar), some clients just aren't good for your company. Some may sap your profits, curtail your growth - in fact, may even put you out of business. Directory:

Google Could Phase Out PageRank Algorithm
Google's PageRank algorithm could become obsolete very soon with Google losing the exclusive patent to the system some time this year. The PageRank technology was created by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin while still attending Stanford University, which actually owns the patent to PageRank. Google, however, has the exclusive licensing rights to it until 2011 and come 2017 the patent will expire completely. Directory:

The ISP Graduated Response Effort Against Piracy
Around two years ago, the RIAA announced a new effort to battle online piracy. Instead of threatening costly lawsuits, they would partner up with ISPs to tackle piracy with a 'graduated response' effort. This meant the ISPs would monitor their traffic better, and try to single out illegal P2P users. After 2 years, is the system working? Directory:

Building Your Startup While Raising A Family
It's no secret that starting a company takes a lot of time and is a huge amount of work. I'm sure it's always been this way for people starting companies, but in the current state of technology startups the situation is amplified with the pace of business, always-on nature of the internet, the ability to "work" from anywhere, and the fear that your competitors are two kids in a college dorm room working 20 hour days eating Top Ramen and drinking Mt. Dew. Directory:
