The Spies Behind Free Stuff on the Net
For a long time it was a complete mystery to me. Why on earth would anyone devote an entire site to giving away free things? Even more perplexing was the vast quantity of sites which did exactly and only that - allow people to get something for nothing. To add to the mystery was the fact that these sites tend to be heavy purchasers of internet advertising and they promote using every means possible. This strongly implies that they have money to spend. How are they making money if they give away stuff for free?

Flushing Out Frauds
"... ALWAYS carry out your own due diligence! Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Regular readers will recognize the above language. It comes from the "Caveat Emptor" section which appears towards the end of each issue of A Home-Based Business Online. Good advice to be sure (even if I do say so myself). But what does "due diligence" mean and how do you do it? Basically, it means to be diligent in researching your proposed business opportunity so you can be as sure as you can be what you're getting into and why.

Choosing a host
So you spent a couple months developing a really great site with pages and pages of excellent content, all you have to do now is choose which company you want to host with. Beware, choosing one is usually not an easy process, if the decision you make is not the right one, all your hard work and promotion money will be wasted. This article will go through first what a host actually is and then go through the features and qualities most good hosts have. Well then what is a host? A host is a hosting company that rents you space on their server for you to store your webpages and files on. There are thousands of them on the Internet and they all differ somewhat between pricing, features, customer service etc.

Credit Card Processing Vendors
Gain Understanding To gain an understanding of how different vendors make payment transactions, we must first figure out how credit cards were originally designed to work. Before anyone even thought of ecommerce, or even EDI became widespread in commercial uses, credit cards were created. However, they did not have a magnetic strip to store information, so all credit card purchases were called in, and a carbon copy of the card was made. With advances in technology, the magnetic strip was added, so merchants could submit customer card information electronically, and quickly get back approval numbers, which were then sent to the bank on carbon copies of the cards. The introduction of the internet and standard EDI for merchant to bank credit card authorizations cut out this step, so now your purchase goes to your creditor, and money is transferred to the merchant's bank, in only a few seconds.

Fast Good Cheap - Pick Any Two
Think about that statement for a minute. Is it true? Sure it is! Especially for small businesses. If you want something in a hurry and you need it to be of good quality, it won't be cheap. On the other hand, if you want something quick and you don't have a lot of money, chances are it won't be the best there is. Now we get to the combination most small businesses need - good and cheap. You're right - it won't happen quickly.

Let's Do the Math
It's funny how sometimes several things seem to happen at once which will call our attention to a place where it's needed. I've received correspondence - and read comments - recently that turned my attention to some of the online payment processing companies. I decided to take a look at what's going on here and couldn't help but be appalled. I'm always appalled when I find unfair advantage being taken of those who are trying their darndest just to run their businesses in a professional manner.

Accepting credit cards through a reseller service
Looking for a way to accept credit card transactions online but can't meet your bank's requirements for a Merchant Account? One of the many ecommerce services that proliferate on the Net may be the answer to your problems. Resellers handle the transactions on your behalf, then issue you payment for sales according to a pre-arranged schedule. You do not need a secure line, since the actual transaction occurs on their site, not on yours. Reseller services are easier to arrange than is a merchant account through the bank, and although you will probably be asked to pay a lump sum at startup, it will be much less than a bank would require.

The Truth about Online Content: It's Time for Writers to Take Back the Web
Google.com, one of the web's hottest search engines, has indexed over 1,346,966,000 web pages to date. The World Wide Web is officially gigantic, with hundreds of thousands of corporate, small business, and ecommerce websites vying for something more than just the "eyeballs" that web analysts hailed in the 1990's. In order to create success, websites are now searching for a steady, interactive audience. Why aren't they succeeding? Could it STILL have something to do with the content?

If you are thinking about starting an online business, there are a few things you need to ask yourself first. Can I dedicate myself to this business? Contrary to what a lot of ads tell you, there is no get rich quick business. If you start an online business, you will be putting in hours each day to make that business successful.
