Another Glimpse into the Lycos Search Engine...
Part 1: http://www.webpronews.com/articles/1216rn.html Question: "So, you have to pay for inclusion before you bid for placement? Is this what I understand?" Adam: "They are two separate programs. The paid inclusion relates to FAST and the Web index. The paid placement relates to the three ad panels that display on Lycos Search."

Search Engine Musical Chairs
News broke this week that Yahoo has purchased the Inktomi search engine for around US$235 million. This is an interesting development in the search engine industry that may impact greatly on exactly where sites get their traffic from. Another new development in the past few weeks is the change to the HotBot service but first, I'd like to look at the ramifications of the Yahoo/Inktomi deal.

Frames and SEO
Dear Robin, Q:After reading the latest WebProNews Article about Search-Engines dropping sites, I felt I had to ask a few more questions. I hope you are able to help. FRAMES - My web-site uses frames as it is quicker to load pages with the header and TOC (Table of Contents) static on screen rather than load them up again every time somebody clicks a link to another page. Is this a problem with search engine optimisation and does it lead to SE's ranking you lower in the listings.

Yahoo!'s Web Ignites the Robot Industry
Everyone is trying to second-guess what's going on at Yahoo!. Some experts are saying webmasters will stop paying $299 yearly for the Yahoo! Business Express listing because they've seen their rankings tank since Yahoo! started serving Google crawler-based results. Others say it's more important than ever to pay for the Yahoo! listing in order to boost link popularity, an important algorithm ranking factor. What Changed at Yahoo!?

Are Your Rankings At Risk?
Ever since there have been search engines, there have been techniques that unscrupulous webmasters and shady search engine optimization firms have used to artificially boost their rankings. As search engines caught on to these techniques, they devised ways to detect them without having someone physically look at each site (a practical impossibility, considering that several individual engines now index well over a billion pages).

Submitting to Inktomi
Dear Dan, The cost for submitting the first URL to the Inktomi database for one year is $39 and the cost for a second is $25. Once a URL is submitted to the Inktomi database for the first year is there any need to submit the URL for subsequent years? Could you review the pros and cons of submitting for the second year versus not submitting?

The Google ToolBar
Dear Dan, We recently achieved #4 on Google tool bar, does it help to bring the site up in key word search? Because until now in key word search our web site is not visible. Do you have any idea what we should be doing to improve the ranking. Can you look at our web site and give us suggestions. Thanks.

Submission Frequency
Dear Dan, How often should you submit your web site to the search engines? I received an email from one SEO company that claims you should do this daily, within the limits of the number of URL you are allowed to submit every day. Others claim that this is abusive, pages should only be submitted when it is new or modified.

All About Inktomi
Inktomi is a behind the scenes search engine, powering some of the largest search services on the web, including MSN, Looksmart, About, and others, as well as a number of regional heavyweights. Dozens of other major web sites use Inktomi Enterprise Search to power their on-site search engine. In short, Inktomi is a major player in the web search arena, despite its low profile, operating largely behind the scenes.

Optimizing Fonts
Dear Robin, I have read that the only font that search engines are capable of reading are the fonts used by browsers. That if you use a custom font, such as Bookman, that it will be not be able to spider your site. I, prior to reading this, changed my font from the browser font to Bookman. I am concerned now that it will affect my ranking. If it is true, is there a way to get around this and still use the custom font?

Optimizing Comic Strips

Is A Yahoo Listing Still Worth The Cost?
In October 2002, the Yahoo! portal changed the way it delivers search results. In the past, the most prominent results were exclusively culled from websites listed in the Yahoo directory itself. Since October, sites listed in the Yahoo directory no longer enjoy this privileged status. The Google search engine now drives the primary search results on Yahoo. While this is certainly an improvement for users of Yahoo search, it's a disaster for many businesses that counted on their Yahoo listing to deliver substantial traffic.

The Advantages of Using FrontPage
Ever since I've been doing SEO work, I've always griped and complained about FrontPage and all the extraneous code it puts in the section of the page, etc. Then recently, I had the opportunity to visit with a group of advanced search engine optimizers, and I was shocked to find that many of them use FrontPage and love it.
