Ebbers Denies Knowledge Of Accounting Fraud
Bernard J. Ebbers, WorldCom's former chief executive denied knowledge of the company's fake accounting information.
Yesterday Ebbers took the witness stand for the first time in the trial. He faces up to 85 years in prison if found guilty of all charges.
According to a NewsDay article,
"Ebbers, in his testimony, explained how he had dropped out of two different colleges before getting his degree in physical education and how he took on an assortment of odd jobs from milk deliveries to running motels before he found his footing in telecommunications. Ebbers also said he donated more than $100 million, usually anonymously, to various charities to help children.
Ebbers also refuted the testimony of former controller David Myers, whoalso has pleaded guilty. Myers said that Ebbers had said he was sorry for what the accounting department had been forced to do in late 2000.
Yesterday, Ebbers said he didn't remember that conversation."
"I didn't have anything to apologize for," said Ebbers. Receive
