AdSense Soon To See More Video

Content from Sony BMG and Warner Music Group will receive a dose of video advertising from Google and made available for publishers in the AdSense Network.

Editor's Note:  It's being reported that Google will start testing AdSense placement on videos again. However, the sites initially showing these ads will be extremely limited. Video ads are supposed to pay well. Have you seen them appear in your AdSense blocks? Did their performance make your account balance happy? Let us know at WebProWorld.

Very soon, Google will start testing AdSense placement on videos again, but only a small group of hand-picked sites will show these lucrative ad units on their pages.

Christian Oestlien from Google's AdSense blogged about the upcoming test, and its participant base:

Over the next few weeks we'll be testing AdSense video distribution and sponsorship with a small group of publishers. You may remember us doing a similar trial last year with MTV Networks, where we distributed ad-supported MTV video content to publishers who displayed the content on their sites.

This time, we'll be working with a larger set of content providers, grouping together video content from providers such as Warner Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment together with quality ads and offering them as playlists which publishers can select from and display on their AdSense sites. Participating publishers range from small to large, and cut across many different types of content.

If your site did not make it into the test, you're out of luck for now. The music-related content would only be well-suited for sites with certain topic areas of focus, and particular demographics. The expanded testing being done now could be a harbinger of greater availability in the short term for video ads throughout AdSense.

The video tie-ins Google will run in its test could prove important when considering one competitor. Yahoo has long enjoyed a dominant place on the Internet when it comes to branded display advertising. Those spots receive prime placement and generate impressive revenues.

Also recall that Google has been quietly trying out a display ad network well before this announcement. Its partners for this video ad effort just happen to be the ones Google Video has signed on to free up music videos on that site.

Remember, one aspect of Google's video ads that have been observed involve having a static image on display in the ad box. The viewer can choose to play the accompanying video. It would be trivial for Google to have that static image display something like "This Metallica moment brought to you by The Pirate Bay, Sweden's finest torrent locator" and count that as an ad view.

Google likes attention to product releases almost as much as Steve Jobs and Apple do. If Google chooses to expand this limited test to all of its AdSense Network this year, we won't be surprised to see it happen in August, when the Search Engine Strategies conference kicks off in Google's backyard.

In case you haven’t heard, WordPress released another update - called Ella (after Ella Fitzgerald) - that promotes the blogging software up to the 2.1 level. The update includes a number of new feature introductions like autosave, increased use of AJAX and a spell checking function for the visual editor.

According to the WordPress blog, Ella also fixes over 550 bugs, something that’s sure to please enterprising SEO blog hackers. Another area of interest concerning the Ella update has to do with the introduction of a search engine privacy feature. This will allow WP bloggers to determine whether or not they want their work to be pinged to or indexed by the search industry.

Because blog comment spam is a constant worry, any news concerning the Akismet plugin - the favorite WordPress comment spam tool - will be of major interest. Fear not fellow WordPress users, Akismet has also been updated and is bundled in with Ella. According to the Akismet blog, some of these changes include:
