The company released a beta version of its YouTube competitor called Soapbox to users of MSN Video, and noted it will be integrated with various services like Windows Live Spaces and Live Messenger.
Editor's Note: Video sharing comes to Microsoft, in
a limited beta version anyway. They will integrate Soapbox
with Messenger and Live Spaces, and I'll guess they will have two or three branded
content channels when it opens to the public. Share
your thoughts about the growing online video revolution at WebProWorld.
The older techies out there probably recognize the classic Microsoft strategy at work with their announcement of Soapbox, a video sharing service presently available only in a limited invitation-only beta currently.
This
is the 21st Century version of Microsoft's mid-1990's strategy, where the company
would see a market develop with another company leading the way. Soon they would
announce a forthcoming Microsoft entry into that market, and plenty of hype would
bubble up despite Microsoft not actually having a shipping product yet.
It was enough to have an impact on a few markets as purchasers delayed their buying decisions to see what Microsoft would release. What worked ten years ago may not be as successful today, but Microsoft is trying anyway.
Visiting the Soapbox site brings up what must be the embeddable media player and a short clip of the MSN butterfly dude grooving on a darkened dance floor. It's enough to bring out the evil lepidopterist in anyone.
Those who are interested can sign up for an invitation from Microsoft to try out Soapbox. Microsoft detailed some of the features of Soapbox in a statement:
Easy uploading and sharing of video creations. By providing single-step uploading, background server-side video processing and acceptance of all major digital video formats, Soapbox makes uploading videos a snap.
Finding and discovering the most entertaining videos. Viewers can search, browse through 15 categories, find related videos, subscribe to RSS feeds, and share their favorites with their friends - all without interrupting whatever video they are watching.
Participation in the Soapbox community. Soapbox users can rate, comment on and tag the videos they view, share links with their friends via e-mail, and include the embeddable Soapbox player directly on their Web site or blog.
Can Microsoft build a better YouTube? It's likely that Microsoft may have an advantage in securing relationships with content providers like music labels and Hollywood studios, thanks to the Windows DRM scheme many use with their content.
Microsoft has the contacts that could take YouTube's experiment with branded channels a step further, since they already work with MTV and its Urge music store. A few content channels that drive traffic to Urge, coupled with participation from ordinary users, may make Soapbox a draw for some of Microsoft's potential audience.

AOL,
Intel Launch PC-to-TV Programming
By
Jason Lee Miller
AOL and Intel launched an on-demand video service for Intel Viiv-based PCs. The
joint effort provides AOL Video's online library of movies, TV shows, music videos,
concerts, and sports videos, viewable on large-screen televisions.
Much of the programming from the PC to TV screen is free to consumers with a large
number of videos available in DVD quality via AOL's Hi-Q format.
The service offers 45 channels of on-demand video programming featuring original,
licensed and branded content; downloadable movies; AOL's video search index. The
user interface offers menu choices to search the entire video library, browse
a video category, or choose from AOL's recommended viewing list via remote control.
"We are very excited to launch our 10-foot AOL Video service with Intel and make what we believe to be the best online video experience on the Web available to consumers on the next generation of PCs and TVs," said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President, AOL.
"AOL Video on Intel Viiv technology-based PCs combines the best premium Web video experience with the best media PC platform to deliver a whole new experience that will forever change how consumers use their TVs," said Kevin Corbett, vice president of Intel's Digital Home Group and general manager of the company's Content Services Group.

MSN Search Losing Steam?
If you are an active Internet marketer, you understand the importance of knowing
where your traffic comes from. This also means you are very aware of the search
engines sending you the most traffic. With this in mind, take a look at our featured
WebProWorld post discussing a noticeable drop in traffic coming from the MSN search
engine. Has anyone else noticed this? Let us know how effective MSN Search has
been at sending traffic to your site.

Traffic From MSN Has Fallen Away...
Is it us or has anyone else suffered any difference in traffic volumes from MSN
since they rolled out Windows Live Search last Thursday.
We have a quite a few No 1 slots on a couple of the regional variants of MSN (Singapore,
India, Australia New Zealand etc) that on a bad day generate a few visits but
since last Thursday nothing (and I mean nothing) - it's like we ceased to exist
and this is across a large number of domains. Now these aren't made for AdSense
sites we are talking about and it is across several servers and a number of different
IP Numbers.
The new Help interface for Windows live is obviously designed not to encourage
Webmasters to contact them as I haven't been able to find a contact us address
- anyone got a contact email address for MSN Webmaster issues? Whilst they are
at it has anyone got an address for Yahoo also. |
