Options Scandal Hitting Apple Stock

Shares of Apple dropped by four percent in after-hours trading, and the iconic computer company may have to restate earnings for several years due to its stock option granting practices.

Editor's Note:  Why does Apple have to restate 4 years worth of financial information? Could this be an issue of stock option backdating? Pretend you are an Apple shareholder and let us know what you think at WebProWorld.
Options Scandal Hitting Apple StockThis is supposed to be a joyous time of year for Apple. Their WorldWide Developer Conference starts on Monday, with CEO Steve Jobs delivering the keynote, a preview of the Leopard version of Mac OS X, and possibly one of his famous "one more thing" announcements that turn Apple's fanbase into drooling puddles of applause.

It will likely be a cheery time for Apple, but not completely so. On August 3rd, Apple announced it would delay the filing of its SEC Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 1st while an internal investigation into the issuance of stock options in 1997-2001 takes place.

Nothing short of a 50-terabyte video iPod with a full-color holographic display and telepathic controls could completely erase the bad taste left after Apple's announcement, though:

Although the investigation is ongoing, the Company has discovered additional evidence of irregularities. In light of this, management has concluded, and the audit committee of the board of directors agrees, that the Company will likely need to restate its historical financial statements to record non-cash charges for compensation expense relating to past stock option grants.

The Company has not determined the amount of such charges, the resulting tax and accounting impact, or which periods may require restatement. Accordingly, the Company today filed a Form 8-K stating that the financial statements and all earnings and press releases and similar communications issued by the Company relating to periods commencing on September 29, 2002 should therefore not be relied upon.

It has been alleged that Apple's problems stem from backdating stock options. By backdating options to a lower share price, the lucky recipient could pull in millions more in gains.

Apple is not the only company being held over the roaring fires of a SEC inquisition here. Numerous other companies throughout the tech sector, especially those in Northern California, have been under federal scrutiny over stock options.

Brocade Communications Systems saw its name brought before the court system first, as former executives charged with backdating options at that company made court appearances this week.

Observers in and out of the tech industry will be watching to see if Steven P. Jobs of Apple will have to make that appearance himself in the future.

Delicious Polishes Its Network Badge
On his way to a hot date, Joe Goodguy flips on his satellite radio. A voice comes over the car speakers, "that's what you're wearing?" Joe eyeballs his "good shirt" and second-guesses. Voice: "The Shirts Chicks Dig store is two lights ahead."

It's really not beyond the realm of possibility, at least not according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Google's effort to personalize and localize advertising across various media could lead to your radio at least knowing where your car is, what direction you're going, what's nearby and what your typical routine is.

Cool? Well, yes.

Creepy? Definitely.

But we're slowly getting used to being spooked.

Google, as do all advertisers, expresses a keen interest in targeting. Satellites are good at locating, monitoring, and delivering signals. Consider Google's recent deal with XM Satellite Radio, whereby Google will deliver advertising inventory through XM's non-music channels.

This inventory includes both national and local advertising, which can be piped through to the home or to the vehicle via one of XM's auto partnerships to millions of subscribers.

Affiliate Links: How To Get Your Affiliate To Pass On Search Goodness

Is there a way to optimize affiliate links so that they can transfer things like PageRank and such to the site that's being linked to? This a good question being asked at the WPW forums, but I think the more appropriate one is do these affiliates want to pass on these search engine benefits or would they like to keep them for themselves? Take a look at the long thread below and see where you stand.

SEO For Affiliate Links

Is there a way to set up an affiliate program so that when my affiliates link to my site they transfer pagerank?

Typically affiliate links are like MainSite.com?ref=affiliate1 I don't know if this is still true today, but it used to be that Google would index MainSite.com?ref=affiliate1 seperate and it could even rank higher than MainSite.com

I thought about having people link to MainSite.com?ref=affiliate1 and then setting up MainSite.com?ref=affiliate1 to set a cookie to track the affiliate and then do a 301 redirect to MainSite.com. But in my testing the cookie was not set after the redirect.

Another option is to have affilates link to MainSite.com and register the domain of their site. Then when someone visits MainSite.com the script checks the http referrer and compares that against all affilate domains. The problem with that is it doesn't allow affilates to include links in email or newsletters they distribute. Are there any other options anyone can think of?
