Video Ads Meet Google Video

A selection of content on Google Video has been made available for free as advertisers have signed on to support those videos. "Free video made possible by www.bk.com," reads the text above the Google Video replay of the Hatton-Maussa fight from last November.

Editor's Note:  What has caused you to get excited about using video ads for your business? Let us in on the details at WebProWorld.
Video Ads Meet Google VideoI'll spare you the suspense; Hatton wins the fight by TKO in the ninth, and the WBA light welterweight title.

Too bad it couldn't have been the first Corrales-Castillo bout, but you do get what you pay for after all. As ZDNet's Garett Rogers noted, the "free today" videos are paid for by advertisers.

But Google's algorithms are not making the choices to match up content and advertisers. Instead, the advertisers choose the videos they want to see associated with their brands. Burger King, with its recent "manly" advertising efforts, looks like a logical choice as a boxing sponsor.

Rogers listed the five advertisers participating in the Google "free today" video test: Burger King, H-P, LowerMyBills.com, Netflix, and Shopzilla.com. By clicking the link to their ads on a Google Video page, a new window displaying the advertisement appears.

The savings varies depending on the video viewed. Two minutes of Linkin Park news would have set the viewer back 30 cents, while a nearly hour-long look at Stone Cold Steve Austin's early wrestling days normally goes for $4.95.

Google noted on the video site some of the videos it makes available for the free play range from 30 cents to $14.95 in price. Considering what is currently playing for free on Google Video, we wouldn't be surprised to see "Ishtar" or "Gigli" as the formerly-$14.95 options offered for viewing.

It is a new test, albeit one that appears to be more of a toe dipped in the waters of ad-supported video instead of a full-bore cannonball into the pool.

There is no urgency for Google to suddenly become the king of ad-supported premium content, but with YouTube grabbing more traffic than Google Video, maybe they should feel a need to push the envelope a little harder.

Google Gives A Few Webmaster Pointers

Jason Lee MillerBy Jason Lee Miller

Google published an array of tips and tools to help webmasters better analyze their web offerings. In addition to a Sitemaps update that creates a more robust view of 404 errors, Google Analytics reminds the ROI-minded of how to compare AdWords clicks to organic and direct links.

The most notable of the Sitemaps updates are the new robots.txt analysis tool, a "snapshot of the status of your site in the index" that notifies of webmaster guidelines violations and includes a simplified re-inclusion request form. Google also added a comprehensive webmaster help center.

David Utter reported also on the Sitemaps update at SearchNewz, detailing a few other features:

Query stats for subfolders at a site may be viewed, along with the currently available stats for top-level domain visits. Google also increased the list shown in the report of commo words on a site. Terms like http and www have been removed from the list.

A user request led the Sitemaps team to increase the number of sites and Sitemaps that may be added to an account, going from 200 to 500. They also added the ability to test the Adsbot-Google spider that crawls AdWords landing pages against the robots.txt file on a website.

Also, the Google Analytics Team asks, "what's the average value of a visit from a certain website worth to you?" Team member Alden DeSoto briefly discusses how to measure the average visit to a website by comparing AdWords clicks to browser-typed direct URL traffic.

The answer can be found in the sometimes overlooked $/Visits column found in the Google Analytics conversion reports, including Campaign Conversion, Source Conversion, Overall Keyword Conversion and CPC vs Organic Conversion. In fact, because this metric is found in so many reports, you can compare per-visit values for organic search referrals, paid keywords, CPC campaigns -- and almost anything else you can think of. It's a great comparison metric that can help you shift your marketing budget to high-performing traffic sources and keywords.

Talking About Duplicate Content Penalites

Have any of you ever been hit with a duplicate content penalty or do you know someone that has? The reason I'm asking is because some are beginning to wonder if one actually exists or not. Apparently, a number of posters are producing such content and have not noticed a drop in their rankings or any warnings from any of the search engines. What do you think? Does the duplicate content penalty actually exist? If so, is it being actively enforced? Let us know at WebProWorld.

Duplicate Content Penalty - Fact or Fiction?

We publish a series of self help web sites in the Health sector and in our case in certain cases there is a certain amount of duplication of terms i.e. if you are writing and giving a detailed analysis of “Acute Myocardial Infarction” there are only a very few ways that you can accurately describe it content wise.

With ourselves and the more major National Health web sites there are obviously is going to be some form of duplication of content.

How real (or not as maybe) is this so called Content Penalty issue? Does it just primarily relate to whole pages of lifted and copied content or is it more flexible? Does it allow for, in our case, featured definitions of certain items? If not how do News Syndicates get away with syndication of news items etc?

I run Windows XP and need to open just one Quark Express graphics file, just once, and hopefully never again. Does anyone know of any software other than Quark's (rather expensive, Mac only) own that will do it on trialware please?
