Another sports-driven arrangement between Microsoft and Fox Sports will deliver
men's basketball tournament information to users of MSN Search with the site's
Instant Answer technology.
Editor's Note: How do you get your hoops fix in March? Would
you use a search engine to deliver your scores, or do you prefer sports websites?
Hit us on the fly with your comments at WebProWorld.
College
basketball fans who are stuck in cubicles while the early rounds of the NCAA tournament
take place can keep up with the scores through MSN
Search. While the jaded Internet user may not see this as the useful benefit
it is, the deal between Fox and Microsoft offers a very positive side.
First a quick overview of what MSN Search will do with Instant Answers and the tournament. By typing in the name of a school, like University of Kentucky, MSN Search returns the real time score of that team's game taking place. Previous game results and next scheduled game details will also appear.
Do a query for March Madness, and MSN Search brings back the real time updates for all the games in progress. Also, Microsoft and Fox Sports have an online bracket contest planned where the top three winners will receive high-definition televisions.
Ok, now I'll address the question of how this is a good alternative for the cubicle-imprisoned. While anyone can indeed hit ESPN, CBS Sportsline, or even the regular Fox Sports website for scores and information, those visits could be used against the innocent hoops fan.
Many companies track their employees' Internet usage, and use software that sorts surfers by how many megabytes traffic they have generated. All of those sports sites do a great job of delivering rich media in the form of images and even videos. On a usage report, that rich media will inflate the traffic number greatly.
Other firms may use their filtering software or access control lists to block access to sports sites entirely. Either way, poor Mark from Advertising is in deep trouble when the boss sees the reports on just what Mark has been doing instead of finishing his catalog page layouts.
I used to be one of those IT oppressors, and generated and distributed those types of reports. I have since turned away from the Dark Side, which is a good thing because my child is old enough to handle a lightsaber and I'd like to keep my right arm. Daddy's reformed, son, see?
Search traffic provides primarily text-based results. Innocuous queries to MSN Search generate little traffic and less notice among the more uptight breed of controlling management types. Hopefully MSN Search has provided a little ray of sunshine for basketball fans in those oppressive environments.

Google Rings Up Mobile Blogging
By
Jason Lee Miller
Google has been busy paving roads from the PC to the mobile phone. The most recent
collaboration came from a partnership with Sony Ericsson to pre-load Google's
Blogger and Web Search features on three new lines of handsets. The companies
say they are the first to provide a pre-loaded blog application.
Ed's note:
Is there a future for mobile blogging? Is this something you're looking forward
to using or just one more feature you'll ignore on your mobile? Tell us what you
think at SyndicationPro.
The mobile blogging functions are designed to incorporate the handsets' mobile camera and also provide an "intuitive" automatic setup for consumers who do not already have a personal blog.
Blogger will be pre-loaded on Sony Ericsson models K610 UMTS, the K800 and K790, and made available in the second quarter of 2006.
"We are seeing exponential growth in blogging and consumers are turning more and more often to the Internet as a means of sharing information or images in personal blogs," said Jan Wäreby, Corporate Executive Vice President, Head of Sales and Marketing, Sony Ericsson.
Along with Sony Ericsson, Google has also struck a deal with BenQ Mobile to provide pre-loaded Web Search functions, including Google News. A special Google Web Search option can be activated from any page without launching a new web page.
"Today's tech-savvy consumers are becoming increasingly more mobile and demand access to information on-the-go, whether it's the latest news headlines or directions to a favorite restaurant," said Nikesh Arora, vice president, European Operations, Google Inc.
In related news, Toshiba last month developed a mobile phone technology that scans product bar codes using a camera phone function and then collects information from the blogosphere to return a near-instantaneous positive or negative product rating. Toshiba will be testing the product in Japanese stores in March.

Is Climbing Google Easier Or Harder?
Here recently, I've been reading about a number of things about climbing up the
Google listings quickly. We've also seen marketing companies that boast the same
thing (something that has been scoffed by most people who have knowledge of the
search industry), however, the situation below piqued my interest on this subject
again.
As you can see by the entry, the poster is going to try and take a site with no
content (at this time, it will be populated) and focus on a keyword that has about
2 million listings. The goal is to be in Google's top 20 by May of this year.
Do you think there's a chance of success? Of course, one of the biggest factors
has to do with keywords and phrases you are targeting, and a 2 million strong
SERP is not that daunting. Share you comments about the chances of this succeeding.

Is Top 20 in Google possible by May 2006?
I have a personal site
(which is my home town) - the site holds nothing yet.
There is a company there that says I have no chance getting into the top 20 every
for the search term 'wexford'. In Google if you look for - Wexford - there are
only 2 million other sites so it can't be that hard. So now I am going to try
and prove him wrong - SEO does work.
