Though the vast majority of AdWords advertisers will not have commercials running during Super Bowl XL on Sunday, they can still learn a lesson about ad targeting for on- and off-line media.
Editor's Note: When it comes to regional targeting, do you
have your game face on? Line up at WebProWorld
and let us know.
Only
during the NFL Super Bowl do TV viewers look forward to the commercials as much
as they do the game. In the case of matchups between teams from smaller media
markets, there is probably even more of the commercial anticipation in play.
AdWords doesn't have a TV commercial scheduled for the big game, but the people behind the service do have some comments that can benefit the heavy advertising hitters and the vast pool of smaller AdWords marketers.
Brands like Pepsi that will be on television should heed the advice that people tend to search the Internet for brands they have just seen during the game. Those advertisers should consider using online advertising to complement their offline spending to take advantage of that.

How does that help the businesses that don't have a TV ad on-screen? AdWords reminds its clients that regional targeting can help greatly:
Whether you're running a local real estate commercial or a nationwide branding campaign, you can tailor your AdWords ads to the specific region that you're targeting to ensure that the people who see your ad on the air, will also find it when they search online.
One example could be the chambers of commerce for both Seattle and Pittsburgh, as well as Super Bowl host city Detroit. Fans may have business to conduct in any of those cities, so why not try to connect with those fans while their interest in a city is deeper than usual?
Other enterprises connected with business tourism, like hotels, restaurants, and airlines, could remind those searching fans about the virtues of using certain brands among those enterprises. Any opportunity to get one's name recognition improved and broadened among potential clients should be tapped, which is what AdWords hopes its advertisers will do.

Police Look To MySpace For Sex Predators
By
Jason Lee Miller
Social networking websites are not only tools for criminals and social pariahs
to mine their perversions, but also increasingly for law enforcement to collect
evidence and set traps. MySpace.com is the latest online area being scoured, this
time to find information related to seven teenage girls who say they've been assaulted
by men they met through the site.
The Associated Press reports that Connecticut police are investigating the cases involving girls ages 12 to 16 who say they were "fondled or had consensual sex" with men who lied about their ages on MySpace.
MySpace.com responded in a statement that site operators were committed to providing a safe environment, complete with available safety tips, and has a minimum age requirement of 14 years old. MySpace admits to the difficulty, though, of policing the breadth of its 47 million plus members for age verification.
Though authorities and adults have shown concern over the immense popularity of MySpace, the members are vehemently protective of their cherished home on the Web. When News Corp. shelled out $580 million to acquire MySpace, users loudly voiced concerns about censorship, privacy, and the possibility of the Fox parent company imposing access fees.

Are You Ready For Some Super Bowl Football?
That's right folks, Super Bowl weekend is finally here. What's the significance
of such a game you ask? Well, not only does this mean one of the most-watched
sporting events will be on, those who watch it will be privy to an advertising
bonanza that you don't normally see, save for the Christmas season. In fact, watching
the Super Bowl commercials has become an event all of its own. There are a number
of social groups that discuss which ads were the best and so on.
Keeping with the theme of this coming weekend, I thought I'd feature a frivolous
thread dedicated to Super Bowl score predictions. If you'd like to discuss some
of our more serious topics, there are a number waiting for solid contributions
on the WPW homepage. However,
if you'd like to get in the spirit of the weekend, drop by and tells us who you
think is going to win or lose. You can also join our NFL Football versus Rugby
discussion, which is also taking part in the same thread, with the comedic relief
being provided by our own Muncy. You guys have a great weekend and if you having
a Super Bowl party, make sure you do so safely.

Super
Bowl Predictions
Since Chris devoted half of his daily ranting thing [from an earlier post]
to the Super Bowl, I felt it was only appropriate to have a predictions thread.
And here are my thoughts:
Seattle has a great ground game and a very good offense overall. Lofa Tatupu is a great linebacker.
But Troy Polamalu is the best ball hawk in the league, and Seattle hasn't yet come up against a safety quite like him.
It'll get Pittsburgh to a first-half lead.
But Seattle will come back. This team is just too strong on the ground with Alexander
for Pittsburgh to overcome. So...I'm picking the Seahawks in a close game, 24-17.
