Flu Web-Tracking Is On The Money
A bird flu in the hand is worth two in the bush and if money grew on trees, then
you may expect to find two birds there too, allowing scientist to track money

Bloggers who use MSN Spaces for their posts can place advertising on their blogs
now, with options for Amazon associates and Kanoodle ads offered.
Editor's Note: Are the changes in MSN Spaces just feature upgrades, or a hint at a future Microsoft purchase? Will allowing advertising encourage you to blog on MSN Spaces? Post about it at WebProWorld.
MAKE
MONEY FA$T! That's the implicit message behind two of the many changes MSN implemented
recently, as they added a couple of options for monetizing a blog on MSN Spaces.
The service now permits users to have associate links to Amazon on their sites. Associates receive a piece of the action whenever someone purchases an item through the Amazon link containing the associate ID.
MSN also said bloggers can earn money with Kanoodle advertisements. Microsoft's relationship with Yahoo, which provides contextual advertising on MSN, ends in June 2006. It is interesting that MSN is going with Kanoodle here instead of Yahoo, as either solution would likely serve as a place-filler until MSN adCenter launches in July.
Perhaps Microsoft likes Kanoodle in an acquisitive way. Microsoft's CFO, Chris Liddell, did suggest Microsoft may buy its way into online advertising through picking up smaller companies. And Kanoodle does have some good partnerships in place with the likes of MarketWatch and USAToday online.
Quite a few other changes in MSN Spaces benefit its users. One late-arriving development lets them add descriptions and comments to photos, a la Flickr. The storage limit has been removed, permitting the upload of 500 photos per month.
Xbox 360 gamers can add their Xbox Live Gamercard to Spaces and list Recently Played Games. The Live Contacts Beta, one of many Windows Live projects, will launch as a feature in Spaces, too.
The blog also cited plans to expand MSN Spaces beyond its current markets. "We are launching in five new markets (Latin America, South Africa, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore), they posted.

Bird Flu Web-Tracking Is On The Money
By
Jason Lee Miller
A bird flu in the hand is worth two in the bush and if money grew on trees, then
you may expect to find two birds there too, allowing scientist to track money
and birds and thereby killing two birds with one stone. Let me explain. No, don't.
Let me start over.
Scientists tracking worrisome potential bird flu outbreaks have incorporated a new tool in their research: wheresgeorge.com, the website devoted to tracking dollar bills as they circulate throughout the country.
As reported in the journal Nature, the scientists believe that tracking the circulation of money may closely match how a disease may spread, possibly making the website a powerful prediction tool.
Currently it is difficult for humans to contract the avian flu, but the virus is expected to mutate into an easily spread form that has spark fears of a pandemic. The ease of worldwide travel in modern times has intensified these fears.
Ideally, scientists would like to track humans with tracking devices as they would animals to decipher their travel patterns. Unable to this, researchers have discovered that tracking money simulates patterns close to how a virus is spread through human contact.
At the wheresgeorge.com website, users register money, spend it, and return to the website to see where it goes. Researchers have found that about 57% of money spent circulated between 30 miles and 500 miles away from the point of sale within nine months. Around 25% traveled beyond that distance.
Researchers plan to build a model of disease patterns based on the data they collect from the site.
An avian flu Google Earth mashup
has already been put together by Nature to trace the historical pattern of the
disease.

MSN Is Ravenous For Content
Even though they trail Google and Yahoo when it comes to search engine usage,
it has not stopped Microsoft from making sure their search index is up-to-date
and filled with useful content. Whether or not they make a dent in the current
search engine use standings is moot, the fact remains the folks at MSN are committed
to providing a quality user experience.
One of the ways this has been addressed is by indexing new content as quickly
as possible. Judging by the post below, it seems MSN Search is outdoing both of
their competitors when it comes to quickly adding newfound content, something
that will benefit their service, regardless of where it finishes in the yearly
ranking reports. Have any of you noticed MSN's speed when it comes to indexing?
Share your thought with us.

MSN
indexing fast as hell...
yesterday at 20:49 (gmt+2) we published a small article:
http://www.wiesentbote.de/artikel-6538.html
today at 8:00 it can alreday be found at MSN:
http://tinyurl.com/9mj54
This even beats Google, where it takes about two days to get an article in. Yahoo needs about a week, and then it only updates the listing of our main articles index page.
So MSN seems to have the freshest content of the big three.
To explain: The site in question http://www.wiesentbote.de
is a local online newspaper, where new articles are posted as they come in. It
is updated permanently. The spiders are visiting like crayzy, if I could build
them a virtual VIP lounge I'd do it... |
