Doc Searls wrapped up his Syndicate Conference in a keynote that discussed the Live Web of content, and some strange elevators in New York's Marriott Times Square property. Only in California.
Editor's Note: We've spent a lot of time this week covering the
Syndicate Conference. How will content syndication help out your site? Let us
know at WebProWorld.
WebProNews
publisher Rich Ord sent along notes from Doc Searls' closing keynote at the Syndicate
Conference, and the notes opened with Searls' observations about the hotel
elevators at the Marriott in New York, the site of the last Syndicate Conference.
He noted the elevators at that hotel have no controls inside. "You don't see what the deal is with this hotel unless you park here. Open the garage door and you're in your hall." (The reason for that is you key in your destination, the system tells you which elevator to take, and it takes you to the floor. Very cool. - David)
Searls tied that into syndication by noting how the Live Web is about time, specifically
by getting people to the content they want when thy want it. He calls this concept
the Syndisphere. "Internal publishers create finished works. This is good but
it is not the only thing anymore."

"Think of blogging and syndication and mix/mash as rolling snowballs. You roll out an idea and others add to it and an interesting thing happens ... it's not yours anymore. It has got to be about more than yourself or your company.
"On the Live Web, production matters more than consumption. People are producing and that matters more than consumption. The chanllenge for producers is to work with other producers. The value chain is turning into the value constellation. Not the value solar system... No one big sun ... it's like everybody gets to be a star here."
Those stars have organization. Searls pointed out how blogs are typically formatted, by the domain name, then year, month, day, and post identifier. "The Live Web is chronological. It's about time and about authors... it is human."
The blood through that human body won't carry advertising as most have come to know it, pre-contextual online advertising. Searls thinks the Live Web "promises the Holy Grail of advertising - demand for it."
He then linked that concept to the Extensible Resource Identifier (XRI). To Searls, XRI is to the "dataweb" as HTTP is to the static "fileweb."
Searls sees a lot of promise for XRI:
- a world of living data
- 100 % click-through advertising
- rich tags
- meaningful credit for work
- independence driven copyright
- voluntary good relationships
- no brute coercion
- security not from the middle ages
"The Live Web isn't a fork, it's more of a branch. It's still the same tree, and growing from the same trunk. Think of the Live Web as one big Declaration of Independence," said Searls.

Syndication
Is No Replacement For Email
By Rich Ord At the Syndication Conference in San Francisco there are a lot of believers in RSS as a replacement for email marketing. I can't disagree more and finally ... I found two speakers yesterday who still believe in email. Now, I have a vested interest here ... my company iEntry Inc. which publishes WebProNews derives about 70% of our revenue via email ads in our newsletters. We have RSS feeds too!
Speaking on a panel were Jim Brady, Vice President & Executive Editor, Washingtonpost.Com and Andrew Eisner, President, Bayview Consulting. Andrew previously worked for PC World. I also spoke to both of them later at a reception held by Yahoo.
Comment on this article at WebProBlog.
Jim stated that RSS is only responsible for a small percentage of Washingtonpost.com traffic and even a smaller percentage of ad revenue. Washingtonpost.com started accepting ads in RSS feeds earlier this summer. Jim noted that "there just isn't that much demand from advertisers yet". He also made it clear that the site is integrating RSS just about everywhere and believes that over time RSS will be a significant factor in pageviews and revenue ... but just not now.
And that is precisely the point of this post. RSS has the potential to be a marketing force ... but it is only potential. That means folks... it is not guaranteed to happen. It's just a prediction.
Andrew later told me that he still reads news via email newsletters .... sorting
them very effectively in Gmail. He also thinks that RSS has great potential but
it is not more powerful than email at this point.

Take Our Content Poll
Here at WebProWorld, Mike started a new forum section called the Content
Discussion Forum. As you can tell by the title, the main subject being discussed
is web site content and the various ways to produce quality work. To kick off
the content section in the right way, new WPW moderator JKomp posted an online
poll asking whether or not content is still king.
My answer, and this is based on the coverage at the Chicago SES, is a resounding
yes. However, my opinion is not the one we are after. Drop by and record your
vote on JKomp's poll and while you are at, share you opinion as to why you voted
the way you did. Take care until tomorrow,

Is
Content Still King?
Is content still king when it comes to developing a site that will rank well in search engines? Does it not now have to at least share, if not quite give up, its thrown with/to link development with keyword anchor text?
I think content is still most important. Search engines do not really wish to deliver sites with lots of links. They want to deliver sites with high quality, relevant content, don't they? Links are just meant to be indicative of this. But what do you think? |
