EBay Says You Should Wise Up

In response to user requests, eBay launched a new service giving buyers and sellers access to listing, bidding, and pricing trends in the marketplace to help them make more informed selling and buying decisions.

Editor's Note:   "Is eBay a large part of your online business? How do you plan to utilize eBay's new historical real-time data service to your advantage?" Discuss in WebProWorld.

eBay Says You Should Wise Up As many anticipate an especially busy online holiday season, the number of people using the Internet as their primary research and pricing resource is expected to increase.

eBay's Marketplace Research subscription service will allow eBay community members access to data and charts and graphs showing real time historical information on product listings.

eBay boasts 168 million users with 60 million listings (including five million new listings per day). Nearly $1,400 worth of good are bought and sold every second. With numbers like these, eBay is often considered a barometer of consumer shopping trends.

One of the more useful features of the service is access to the Average Sold Price (ASP) to determine how much a product typically sells for. Statistical information like the number of times a product has been listed and average bids per item also provide a glimpse of what's hot this season.

Sellers will have access to real-time data going back as far as 90 days (with the right package) to keep them informed on recent trends in starting prices, ASPs, shipping charges, and top search terms.

EBay Says You Should Wise Up"As eBay.com continues to grow and evolve, sellers and buyers often need to make informed decisions quickly," said Bill Cobb, president, eBay North America. "eBay Marketplace Research offers them a convenient but powerful new e-commerce service, just in time for the key holiday season."

Subscriptions are available at three price levels-Fast Pass ($2.99 for 2 day use), Basic ($9.99 per month) or Pro ($24.99 per month). Fast Pass and Basic packages provide information looking back 60 days, while the Pro edition looks back 90 days.

Link Popularity Explained

Joe Griffin By Joe Griffin

Search engines like Yahoo and Google store over ten billion web pages in their vast databases, so structuring and organizing this content is a major undertaking. To properly organize this data, search engines have developed sophisticated algorithms to the measure the importance of the web pages within their databases. The importance of a web page is measured by in two ways, as detailed below:

1) Onsite Optimization
This form of optimization is commonly referred to as "search engine optimization" or "natural search engine optimization." Natural search engine optimization information can be found all over the web. For more information, search "natural search engine optimization" on Google.

2) Offsite Optimization
This form of optimization is commonly referred to as "Link Building." It is often categorized under three identities called "one way links," "reciprocal links," and "text link advertising," as detailed below:

One-Way Links
One-way links can be attained through:
  • Directories.

  • Message Boards / forums.

  • Blogs, RSS feeds, and press releases.

  • Company affiliates including partners, clients, parent and sister websites.

  • One-way link email requests.

  • Three-way link email requests.

  • Reciprocal Links
Reciprocal links can be attained through:
  • Link exchange (two-way) e-mail requests.

  • Acceptance of outside exchange requests.

  • E-mail exchange requests sent from the Company to other relevant websites.

  • Partnerships - Reciprocating with partners is common among websites. When this arrangement occurs, both partners benefit.

  • Internal Reciprocation - Many organizations may own or operate more than one website.

  • In some scenarios, internal reciprocation between sites is search engine friendly. In other scenarios, it may not be. I would advise consulting with an expert to analyze your situation, if you have one.

Link reciprocation should not occur through existing link reciprocation databases that cater to the same group of websites. These networks are commonly called "link farms."

Does A Post-Jagger Google Target Alt Text?

Greeting WPN/WPW denziens. In today's spotlight post, poster dburdon looks at another potential spam issue that Google seems to be targeting since undergoing the notorious Jagger update: image Alt Text. Some feel Google has implemented new filters that prevent potential spammers from using an image's alt text attribute to stuff with targeted keywords in order to receive ranking benefits.

Take a look at what's being said about this subject and see if you have anything you'd like to contribute.

    Google - Alt text penalty

This is just an observation. And I think its perhaps one of the few issues by Ken's (Greeneagle) "dust settles" assessment of Google post Jagger 3.

I've noticed from the client categories I manage that many of the sites with strong visuals on the home page seem to be down. Initially I thought this may be to do with Flash. But Flash has always been a drag on Google SERPs. And anyway, to get on the front page of Google, you've got to have strong off page influences.

A closer inspection - in the categories I cover - shows that many of the sites are using jpeg or gif visuals.

Classic SEO tells us that these visuals will be accompanied by relevant alt text. An even closer inspection of just a few sites shows that the alt text has become transposed and sometimes corrupts the standard site copy.

Could Jagger also be addressing the issue of "alt text" spam?
