If you're on an online marketer with a limited budget, then you're in luck. I've compiled a list of online or downloadable SEO tools that I recommend and use on a regular basis. Each of these tools has to do with the organic or "natural" search engine rankings of websites.
Editor's Note: In today's article, WebProWorld member bharzter highlights some very helpful tools that should ease the workload for most SEO undertakings. Are there any you've used that Bill may not have talked about? Discuss at WebProWorld.
Savvy online marketers use a combination of these tools to analyze and generally "figure out" why one particular web page is ranking better than another web page.
Aaron Wall's Link Popularity/Backlink Analyzer
Aaron Walls' tool is fairly new to the game, and he apparently has spent a lot of money developing this tool. This SEO tool allows you to analyze all of the links that are pointing to one particular website. Once you download and run it, you are given several reports-one of the reports allows you to see the anchor text of the links that are pointing to that site. Anchor text is the actual clickable link text that describes a link. Search engines rely anchor text information in order to "figure out" what a web page is about-they use that as an important part of their algorithm. This tool requires that you install it on your PC. Aaron also has a list of more free SEO tools on his site.
We Build Pages' Free SEO Tools
I'm amazed by the number of tools that the We Build Pages folks have available in their arsenal. There several good free online SEO tools and analyzers. The Neat-o Backlink Tool, like Aaron Wall's tool mentioned above, "checks your backlinks (only showing one backlink per URL that links to you) and shows the link text used to link to you." This tool is an online tool and doesn't require that you download it.
The C Class Backlink Analyzer Tool, also by We Build Pages, is a tool that checks the IP addresses of links to a site. This is important because not all links are created equal-it's better to have fewer links from a lot of websites than a whole bunch of links from only one or two websites.
A third tool by We Build Pages, the Top 10 Analysis Tool, will give you the "big picture" of the rankings for a search term. "Type in a search phrase and this tool will check the top 10 sites in Google and will then show you things such as how many pages are indexed for each site, backlinks, allinanchor rankings, keyword density, and much more." Run this tool to see how competitive a search term is and what might be required to rank well for that search term.
URL Trends
This online tool gives you a "big picture" and an overall analysis of a website. URLTrends allows you to view trend reports of a website's current and previous Google PageRank, Alexa Rank and incoming links for the URL. It also tells you the site's DMOZ status (if it's listed in DMOZ.org).

SEM
Company Dumps Link Buying
By David Utter
The strategy of purchasing text links on other sites to improve rankings within search engines may be having a negative impact instead.
British search engine marketing firm Site Visibility disclosed in a press release that it won't be buying any more text links. Further, they plan to prevent existing links they've purchased from impacting a site's ranking.
The rise of Google, Yahoo, and other search engines has made high ranking a priority for online businesses. Many companies have responded to the need for better search engine marketing with an array of strategies to garner better placement.
One factor impacting a site's ranking has been the number of inbound links to a site. Firms like Site Visibility would purchase inbound text links to sites on other sites. As the number of links increase over time, a particular site would be lifted in search engine results.
Site Visibility said it is taking this action to avoid endangering
its clients from being penalized by the search engines. The
usual penalty for sites that try to overaggressively game the
system is to be banned from the search engine instead.
It will be interesting to see how many other SEM firms
may follow suit. The company's John Everton, search engine marketing
account manager, wrote more about the company's decision in the
statement:
"While
we do not believe that our link purchasing has ever negatively impacted
search engine results, we have decided to change our approach and take
a pro-active move towards helping search engines maintain natural
search results." He goes on to add, "As an ethical search engine
marketing company it is important that Site Visibility is seen as a
business that only adopts SEO techniques that are considered
‘white-hat.' Any border-line search engine marketing practices are
eventually picked on up by the top search engines and in our market we
cannot afford to take risks with our client's brands and websites."

Inconsistent Rankings?
Hey everyone, It's Friday. Hopefully, this makes you as happy
as it does me. Another great thing about today? The first official
practice for the University of Kentucky's basketball team. If
you know me or are aware of some of my ed's pics, it should
be pretty clear how excited I am about that.
Moving forward. In today's spotlight post, thebloke
looks at a site that has a good search presence
without being at all optimized. Drop by the thread and see if
you can shed some light on bloke's dilema.
Have a great weekend.

How on earth.....?
Can anyone tell me how this site (http://www.bennetts.co.uk)
Is constantly top of the tree for the keyword motorcycle insurance?
The page doesn't appear to be very well optimised at all.
There's javascript in the head of the document, it's all nested
html tables, there's very little text on the page, no title
tags in the links - I can't find anything in it at all! I'm
baffled!
