Aaron Wall has an interesting article detailing how his SEOBook and SEOGuy websites
have been dumped in the recent Google update.
Is the SEO game getting harder? Are positive results becoming more difficult to
attain? Discuss at WebProWorld.
"A couple of the sites that were hit in the Google update were ranking well
in most major search engines for the term "SEO."
Recently SEO Guy ranked #1 in Google. My
SEO Book blog also ranked in the top 10
- 20 sites since June of last year.
I just checked Yahoo! and MSN and SEO Guy was #1 for "SEO" on both sites. My site
was #4 and #6. Teoma is a topical clustering based search engine and even their
algorithm still ranks my site at #11.
After the recent Google update both SEO Guy and SEO Book no longer rank in Google
for their official site names."
Many theories and surmizes follow, but they boil down to this:
Over optimized sites have been hit again...
This also ties in nicely with a thread i read a bit of over at WMW recently: The

Member Tomthumb2000 says...
"I've been reading masses of opinions over the past few weeks and it strikes
me that with so many conflicting opinions and contracditory evidence, what conclusions
can the average webmaster draw?
It seems to me that the best tactic may be to just develop a site with plenty
of good content, relevant titles, get the ODP and Yahoo listing and leave it at
that. I've seen plenty of sites developed in Notepad reach the top of their SERPS
without ever requesting a link or giving more than a relevant handful of links
out.
I can accept that there exist webmasters and companies with genius techies and
a hard-wroking team of Web promoters who can get results. But for the average
webmaster is his time not best spent in developing a good site? Especially when
no one can agree on what works anyway?
Maybe I'm just naive..."
What i wonder now is this:
Is Google specifically targeting SEO efforts?
How does this change the SEO game?
I think the first one is a bit of a no brainer :) but the second should provide
some food for thought ... right?
Personally, as I've said before, the harder this game becomes the better off the
industry will be..
Thanks Brad

Pick
A Niche And Own It
By
Jennifer
Rice
Had a one-day branding session with a client yesterday. Small company, lots of
potential. They wisely selected a niche market to target initially, because they're
in a crowded space.
So right now, they can say to prospective customers that they're the only widget
software designed to meet the needs of "x" market.
This is a terrific way for most businesses to get a loyal following: pick a niche
and own it. Then pick another one. And another. (I wrote previously about this
here
and here.)
BTW, this can't be a marketing trick; your product really needs to be designed
to meet the specific nuances of that niche. But the challenge is, you can't build
your company brand on being the 'Niche X Widget Provider' for two reasons:
- The 800-pound gorillas finally notice you and think, "Hey, that's a great
idea. We'll do that too." And they've got the resources to eat your lunch pretty
quickly (or they buy you, which isn't always a bad thing).

A WebProWorld member needs your help
Today's post comes from garris.
They hired a SEO "expert" to optimize their site, and are having
problems. Part of their agreement was that she would be able to get 4 of the
sites pages in the top 10 for their selected
keywords. When she finished the site, none of their pages were in the top
10, even though she said they
were when she finished the site. She is expecting payment and that has left
garris in a bad position.
Think you can help garris out? Tell us your
thoughts at WebProWorld.

Does
adding pages affect ranking?
By garris
I hired a SEO "expert" to optimize my site, capsandvisors.com, for the term "baseball
caps". We have worked through some problems, but now she's done and wants to be
paid.
The agreement was for 4 placements in the top 10 of the major search engines.
She says she did it, but I don't see it on any major SE or directory.
She says the reason the rankings have dropped is because we've added a few more
pages to the website for new items.
