Scott Buresh practices (and writes about) straight-ahead style search engine optimization
that puts you on top and keeps you on top. Today we're featuring his article,
"Search
Engine Keyphrases and the Power of the Modifier," which will help you make
strong keyword decisions.

it here.
The link building
vs. content seo debate is still raging in the forums. John Scott, a staunch
advocate of link building, keeps the thread hopping with his belief that, for
competitive search terms, links are the only way to top rankings.
Learn about this
crucial aspect of SEO!
Which Is More Important? Ken McGaffin, author of Tuesday's article on building
the link value of your site, entered into the fray with a testament to links
and link building that advocates both the content and link building aspects of
SEO.
In response to the question of whether links or content is more important he said,
"It’s a bit like asking a professional golfer which is more important, driving
or putting? Some will be fabulous drivers, others fabulous putters, but you need
elements of both if you are to be successful."
The Power Of Links. He recently decided to test the power of linking. He
wrote a free report on link building strategies and started his LinkingMatters
site to measure the power of linking on its own. He did no "formal SEO" on his
site, but his pages are SE friendly.
His results? Check this out: "on Google, we now rank between position 8
and 10 in results for the term ‘linking’ (6.5 million results returned) and positions
1 and 2 for the term ‘linking strategy’ (1.6 million results returned)."
His best advice?
You absolutely must have great content (and should never be afraid to link
out to great content)
A linking strategy, targeted at top sites can produce tremendous results
Those results will be greatly enhanced through SEO
Keeping adding content.
Read
his post to learn more about his actual linking strategy.
While we're far from closing the door on the debate (you can tell from the posts
that it's a complex issue), I think it's safe to say that link building must accompany
content SEO to produce the highest possible rankings and best possible response
from your site visitors.
Here's another excellent
linking discussion thread from WebProWorld.
Getting Listed In German Search Engines. How does one get listed in Google.de?
If you're in the US Google will you automatically show up in Google.de? What other
German search engines or directories are there for sites who want German-speaking
visitors?
Boiling with questions, I contacted Mike
Grehan, the European Managing Director for iProspect.
He spoke at the Chicago Search Engine Strategies Organic
session with Brett Tabke.
Here's a portion of our q&a. You can read
the whole interview here.
WPN: If a US website has a section in German, and they can find that site
in Google.com, will Google.de be able to find those pages?
iProspect: If the pages on the US site in German language are important
enough to attract quality linkage, then most certainly they would be found in
google.de. It should be remembered though, that google.de is servicing German
language users in Austria, Luxembourg and even Belgium too. So there will be variations
in use of language, dialect etc., to consider.
The same can be said in return. If a German site has English language pages which
are important enough to attract quality linkage then they can be found searching
on the google.com site.
Generally speaking, it's not a question of where the pages are hosted. It's about
how important that content is in the community it exists in.
WPN: What are the three major non-us search engines/directories in Germany?
iProspect: The only crawler based country specific search engine in Germany
is fireball.de
The directory sites are supported by the majors such as Yahoo, Open Directory
as well as some smaller independent vertical directories.
There are regional crawler based sites supported by the majors, again such as
Google, Alta Vista, Yahoo etc.
WPN: What recommendations would you give companies seeking German markets
through Google.de?
our interview in the forums.
Enjoy!

Term Modifiers That Boost Traffic
By
Scott Buresh
Most
search engine optimization experts agree that the keyphrase selection process
is the single most important step in a search engine optimization campaign. However,
clients frequently ask their search engine optimization company to target very
general and competitive search engine keyphrases. While targeting such terms is
usually not worth the effort, the addition of a simple modifier can take an ultra-competitive,
general keyphrase and transform it into something useful- a phrase that attracts
a large percentage of people that are looking for exactly what you offer, and
for which high rankings are attainable.

I'm a content guy. Trust me, not a programmer. But in this world you need to understand
the fundamentals of programming if your interested in developing new applications.
And new applications are where the fun and money are hiding. The fun is in the
development of new ideas, the money, it'll come as a reward for new and innovative
applications. So far I've been a Windows OS user; it's what I grew up on. Have
I been alseep at the wheel though? ...
Color
Usage and International Audiences
By southplatte
I was on here going to do some site reviews, and a thought occured to me....
Most any designer knows about web safe color pallets, and creating visually appealing
color combinations for a site. However, what about when you are designing for
an International audience?
Some colors in the US or UK, mean one thing, yet in another country, say Japan
or Russia may mean something completely different.
Should the web designer worry about this? The company having the site made? Both?
