Search Mecca. Next week the search engine industry's descending on Chicago for a three day convention called Search Engine Strategies.

With experts like Danny Sullivan, Jill Whalen, Andy Beal, and Shari Thurow, along with representatives from Google, Overture, and AskJeeves, this conference promises to blow the lid off of search marketing.

From the event organizers: "At this intensive three-day event, you'll learn the ins-and-outs of search engine marketing from top experts in the field and from the search engines themselves."

WebProNews On The Scene. I'm going and I'll be reporting back to you extensively on the latest trends and techniques in optimization, along with real quotes from search engine optimization professionals and representatives of the search engines themselves.

I'll be posting in the forums throughout the three-day event, so be sure to check in periodically to get live updates on the search engine industry.

In addition, our issues of WebProNews during the event will be in the form of special reports from the conference, so you’ll have all the latest information in your inbox.

Highlights. Danny Sullivan's Tuesday presentation, called Search Term Research, should really help with one of search marketing's fundamental skills: choosing search terms. How can you really know which terms are best to target? I'll let you know.

Balancing Organic & Paid Listings looks like Wednesday's winner, with a focus on how to get just the right amount of pay and search optimization for your site. There has to be some steady ground between Google's constantly changing algorithm and the price of clicks.

Measuring Success Case Studies, from Thursday, should offer some creative ideas on measuring the success of your search campaign. While the bottom line is always, well, the bottom line, there just might be some out-of-the-box results to shoot for with search engines that could really drive sales.

Who's Going With Me? If you're already going, send me an email to let me know. I'd like to meet you and chat for a bit about your business. As if the pleasure of my company weren't enough, I'll also give you a linked mention in WebProWorld, and possibly in WebProNews.

If you're interested in going, visit the Search Engine Strategies site to learn more.

Cracking Google's New Algorithm

Andrew GoodmanBy Andrew Goodman

Cracking Google's New AlgorithmGoogle recently made far-reaching changes to the way it ranks search results, and the search marketing community has been abuzz with tales of woe ever since. Some have speculated that the key to understanding Google's latest is that they've applied some sort of test of "commerciality" to certain phrases, roiling the waters for sites ranked well on those phrases, and leaving non-commercial phrases more or less alone. The idea is that this would cause a stampede of site owners over to the paid AdWords program, or at least making the point that Google isn't up for providing a free lunch to clever "SEO-ized" sites indefinitely.

So is this just a theory? Or has Google composed a hit list of terms that are commercially valuable, and changed the way it ranks sites on those terms?

Should Google Be Regulated?

simonmBy simonm

Considering the increasing importance that is placed on Google for the dissemination of information and promotion of business, along with the recent serious inconsistencies in site placement on this search engine, perhaps it is time that Google was regulated?

Janeth: I think it is there business to do with as they like. But what I would like to see is some good competition. ...

Optimizing Sites

rlrouseBy rlrouse

drifter69: I have been considering getting the site optimized... I have heard you can 'submit' sites to search engins and was wondering how to do this?

rlrouse: First of all, don't fall for any of the "Click here to submit your website to 10 Billion search engines!" offers. At best, you'll simply lose your money.

Next, get some high quality links into your site from other sites, which will let the major search engines "find" your site on their own. This method is by far faster (and you'll get higher rankings) than submitting. You NEVER need to submit a site to Google. ...
