The Florida Boogie. You may have noticed a change in your Google rankings
recently. That's the most recent Google Dance the SEO industry wags have named
"Florida." My advice is to be on your best SEO behavior. This means focus on solid,
relevant, keyword-light content for your site.
My thinking, and this is backed by Barry Lloyd in this
article, is that Google's moving away from PageRank as a means of ranking
sites. Since Google values the concept of organic
ranking they're cutting old, exploitable aspects of their algorithm.
I'll
keep you posted, and would love to hear your
theories.
ps: here's a comprehensive Danny Sullivan article called "Google
Dance Syndrome Strikes Again."
Mommy what's a subpoena? I thought I'd share this recent
article on talking to your children about downloading music on the internet.
According to this article the first step is "Figure Out What Your Kids Are Doing
Online." Sounds like a great place to start.
More Good News. Wow! The day-after-thanksgiving
online sales were up 31% this year to US$200 million according to comScore. This
article reports that the best is yet to come and online sales may top $12
billion for the first time ever.
Who's poised for the highest sales? Luxury e-tailers, electronics sellers, and
toy sites. Is it too late to start drop shipping PS2s?
The Google Conspiracy. As the Google search monopoly increases, so do the
conspiracy theories. Google-Watch.org
wants to educate you about Google's potentially harmful effects on business, privacy,
and the spread of information online.
Extreme or not, it's refreshing to hear someone writing about Google in a more
critical tone.
You Can't Copyright Look And Feel. Since source code is right there for
you to copy and paste into DreamWeaver, are you ever tempted to lift site structure
from well designed sites (call it a template) and make changes to the color and
content?
Has someone spiked my coffee?
You make the call.

Have a good one!

Create
Content That Drives Action
By
Christine Perfetti
UIE: In your book, "Content Critical" you describe the web as a medium
for publishing content and recommend that designers view their site as a publication.
Is the web-publishing model a change in mindset for most designers?

Gerry McGovern: My focus is business websites with commercial or strategic
objectives. For these types of websites, a publishing approach works very well.
Publishing is about getting the right content to the right person at the right
time at the right cost. It's about selecting the best content and editing it really
well, so that it makes compelling reading.
Some designers take a volume approach to content. "Let's get clever software and
organize as much content as possible," this thinking goes. Some take a strong
graphical design approach, emphasizing the visual. My approach doesn't ignore
the software or the visuals, but focuses fundamentally on the words on the page.
That's because, it is words that drive actions on a web page.

With three weeks left before the holidays, I've finally started shopping for this
season's gifts. Now, I'll admit that I usually do put off my seasonal shopping
until the last minute, so this year I was proud of myself for starting so early.
That is, until I starting reading about how holiday
sales are already up -- I guess a lot of people beat me to it anyway!
While this could make it slightly harder for me to find that PS2 game my sister
wanted, this year's surge in holiday sales could be great news for e-Commerce.
But does your site have what it takes to convert visitors to buyers this holiday
season? Read today's top post for some hints and tips...

Top 10 Deadly Website Sins
By
minstrel
I ran across this looking for another article and, other than the credits at the
end, I don't know the original source - if anyone knows, please tell me and I'll
add the appropriate credit.
Top 10 Deadly Website Sins
1. Not updating the content on the website. Where would you rather be for a long
period of time, a library full of books or a room with several mediocre paintings?
If you had to return, where would you rather go? Content can be photos, articles,
news clips or narrative.
2. Thinking that just because you have a website, business will come flowing.
Bringing visitors to your website takes a consistent effort and time.
3. Not marketing your site. ...
The
Florida Update - New Strategy
By denny
After the Florida update I thought of penning down the summary of it apart from
cries. Here's what I hate to see, but true:
Linking Strategy
You should not have one single key phrase as anchor text for all backlinks. Try
to have around 4 to 5 key phrases... Also, try to link different pages instead
of your homepage. Don't do reciprocal linking; you will be penalized for that.
