For the inside track on Google Analytics, one need look no further than Brett Crosby, its senior manager. In a recent interview, Crosby spoke about becoming part of the team, what it's working on now, and what difficulties it may face in the future.

The interview was conducted by Eric Enge (Search Engine Watch's Kevin Newcomb also deserves a hat tip for coming across the transcript). Crosby's responses emphasized the "Google is good" image that the company likes to maintain.

He also addressed the image of Google Analytics itself. "Instead of having an expensive product, like most of the rest of the market, we have a free product," Crosby pointed out. "Many analytics products come with a pre-determined set of professional services, and then if you want additional things the analytics vendor will up-sell you . . . . Google has used a really different approach."

Later in the interview, Crosby was asked about "key challenges." He again worked the "trust factor" into his response, saying that "people being concerned with privacy" could complicate matters, "although we've started to see people relaxing about that issue as they see that we analytics are fairly benign."

Crosby identified "one of the most obvious [challenges]" as "people deleting cookies and not allowing Javascript," however. "Yet another one is being able to track rich Internet applications, and things like Ajax on pages," he continued.

The senior manager of Google Analytics ended the interview by mentioning his team's philosophy: "what does the big picture look like and how do you fix the problems so you can run a more efficient business and create a better user experience."
