2007: The Year Of The Google Calendar?

It's a new year, and perhaps one of your resolutions is to get more organized. Using a calendar would certainly help with that, right? If you're in the mood to play "Follow the Leader," new data indicates that you'll likely select Google Calendar - it just surpassed MSN Calendar in terms of traffic, and looks poised to catch up with Yahoo Calendar.

Hitwise's LeeAnn Prescott took a look at the numbers, and found that "in the six months from June 2006 to December 2006, the market share of visits to Google Calendar increased by 333%, at the expense of its main competitors." To call that "not bad" would be an understatement.

In her post, Prescott also discussed some connections (and lack thereof) that favor Google Calendar. Her numbers indicate that "people who are not necessarily heavy Gmail users are now using Google Calendar, including users of Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail."

Google Calendar's "easy to use features and sharing capabilities have allowed it to steal share from its competition, and in this case, catch them in less than a year," Prescott continued.

Want more evidence of Google Calendar's success? Michael Arrington looked at comScore's statistics on the matter, and found that they were mostly in agreement with the Hitwise data. That's "something that rarely seems to happen," he noted.

Google Calendar's accomplishment provides a nice contrast to the other problems and glitches that the company has already encountered in the new year. And if you want to become more organized, this Google product could be just the thing.
