According to new research from Hitwise average daily visits to ecommerce sites from Thanksgiving through the Thursday before Christmas were up 5.9 percent compared to 2005. The days with the single biggest increases over last year were Cyber Monday the first Monday after Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving Day.

Traffic to the Retail 100 Index was up 13.2 percent on Monday, November 27, 2006 compared to Monday, November 28, 2005. For Thanksgiving Thursday, November 23 visits to the Retail 100 Index was up 11.8 percent compared to Thanksgiving Day 2005.

This week, visits to websites within the Hitwise Retail 100 Index were up 6.2 percent for the week ending December 23, 2006 compared to the same period in 2005.

Amazon.com was the most visited website receiving 13.18 percent of the market share followed by Wal-Mart with 9.13 percent and Target was third with 5.10 percent.

CircuitCity.com and BestBuy.com had the biggest increases in visits from week to week. Circuit City had an increase of 20.7 percent while Best Buy had an increase of 17.1 percent. Hallmark.com was the fastest moving website within the Index jumping 14 spots from 31 to 17, an increase in visits of 97 percent for the week ending December 23, 2006.

The market share of visits to the iTunes website was up 413 percent compared to Christmas day of 2005. New iPod owners visited the iTunes store in droves to download music.

"For the third holiday season in a row, the iPod has been the must-have Christmas gift," said Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise. "Competitive offerings have not yet succeeded in capturing the attention of music listeners, and the surge in visits to the Apple Store shows that iPod owners are also engaged in filling and accessorizing their new devices."
