Microsoft, Yahoo, Google: "Top Web Properties"

comScore released a list of the top fifteen Web properties earlier today, and there are some very familiar search-related names in the first three positions. Microsoft's sites lead the way, with both Yahoo and Google trailing behind, according to these September rankings.

That means Microsoft's sites received the most unique visitors during that month - 505,479,000 in all, the comScore data claims. (In a slightly ironic twist, the comScore site appears to be down right now, so the link goes to a Yahoo Finance version of the press release.) Yahoo and Google were both within striking distance of Microsoft's impressive number, with 480,641,000 and 467,498,000 unique visitors, respectively.

The drop to fourth place is a big one. eBay earned that spot, but had only 237,327,000 guests. By the time the list makes its way to Ask, in ninth place, the numbers are roughly halved again (at 112,768,000). Google's recent acquisition, YouTube, received just 81,019,000 in its position as the fourteenth top Web property.

These rankings come in the midst of some new turmoil in the eternal argument about the Microsoft/Google rivalry. Microsoft caused the hubbub, mostly by releasing some financial data. As our David Utter put it, "If you were impressed with Google's successful financial quarter, consider this: their much-ballyhooed competition with Microsoft ends at the balance sheet, as Redmond's juggernaut pulls in as much quarterly revenue as Google will do this year."

Google is following an upward trend in pretty much every respect, though, so don't be surprised if the company passes Microsoft - or at least Yahoo - in the next report on top Web properties.
