Genieknows.com looks to offer users a focused search platform centered on vertical topics such as health, gaming, and business. The project, based out of Nova Scotia, is currently in beta testing.

Providing relevant, informative search results is the raison d'être of any would-be search engine. In the expansive nature of cyberspace, however, the pursuit of accuracy can often get lost in the shuffle of broad search terms and the ever-present struggle against spam.

Enter vertical search.

Vertical search is a hot topic floating around the search community these days. While sites like Google offer visitors an all-inclusive vault of information from which to search, vertical search engines focus on specific informational realms in an effort to provide search results geared toward particular fields of interest.

GenieKnows.com is indicative of the new trends leaning toward vertical search. The Canadian-based search engine recently began offering vertical search functionality to its visitors in the realms of health, gaming, and business.

"We are excited to add vertical search capabilities to our current array of services," said Barbara Manning, president and chief executive office of GenieKnows.com.

"Coming on the heels of our Local Search platform, the vertical technology will now allow users to access a condensed, smarter and more focused version of search while avoiding the clutter that appears in other search engine results."

During testing of the client, specific queries pertinent to the respective verticals (diabetes for health, poker for gaming, and stocks for business) yielded pertinent search results.

Broad searches across all three verticals (debt, as an example) told another story.

The results from broad search terms were unusually erratic and suspiciously filled with spam content. Of course, broad searches are not typically the niche to which vertical engines are looking to cater.

A source from Genieknows.com elaborates, "Our search engine platform will be targeted at people that are seeking specific information within verticals. The point here is that keyword ‘debt' is a somewhat generalized search term - and does not represent a users need for information."

This is the first beta release of the vertical search client, and the platform is still under major development. The company is working to present a product to visitors containing as little spam as possible, while still delivering relevant, targeted search results within the vertical platforms.

"A heavy focus for the development team is SPAM detection and eradication and at this time generalized search terms (such as ‘debt') may trigger search listings that are clearly SPAM in origin," comments Tony Abou-Asseleh, director of R&D for GenieKnows.com.

There is currently no targeted official release date for the vertical search engine.
