Mystery Site Is "Not For Noobs"
Microsoft may have something really cool up its sleeve. A strange site has appeared at www.notfornoobs.com. It features a static-filled television that shows glimpses of the Microsoft logo, a three-headed snake, and a countdown timer. Then it requests your e-mail address.
This could also be a Microsoft attempt to build up hype over something rather less than cool. It may even be a hoax perpetrated by someone completely unrelated to Microsoft. Sean Alexander, who works for the Redmond-based company, wrote on his blog, "This may not be legit. I'm digging around internally. In the meantime, I don't recommend entering your email info until we know for sure."
People are asked to enter their e-mail address, in case you're wondering, so that they can find out what exactly is "not for noobs." "We'll let you know when it's time," the site teased. Speculation abounds. Alexander thought it might have something to do with the new movie "Snakes on a Plane."
UPDATE: Sean Alexander has "confirmed the site is legitimate."
Gizmodo identified the snake (correctly, to my eye) as "the logo for Razer - the company that makes high-end gamer hardware," and speculated that the site "has something to do" with that sort of product. Gizmodo also noted "that the countdown seems to end next Thursday night at midnight, eastern."
In the meantime, we get to sit and stare at a static-filled television. One last quote from Sean Alexander seems fitting here. "I have to admit, it's not the best I've seen . . . ." And yet whatever this site is, it's definitely generating some buzz.
