Opera Wants Users To Get Widgety

Opera Widgetize attempts to encourage more of its browser users to create little applications, or widgets, with a few mouse clicks instead of lengthy coding sessions.

A three-step process makes it easy for any Opera user to create a widget for a website or blog. The Opera Widgetize! site provides the starting point for building a feed reader widget.

In the first step, the user can pick either the Classic style or the Advanced feature widget by clicking the radio button next to the desired choice. I picked the Advanced option and clicked over to step two, where I can name my widget (WPN Insider Reports) and assign a data feed to the widget.

Then I have the option of choosing a skin for the widget. The UFO theme appealed to me, so a radio button click there made that skin part of my widget. A preview of each theme appears on the page, so users can see how their widgets will look.

After that, the Opera Widgetize process generates the code for the new widget. If you are viewing this in Opera 9, you can click here to see the widget in action. Other browsers will be redirected to a page where Opera will try to convince you to give Opera 9 a try.

Opera Widgetize also supports a variety of blog platforms, like Yahoo! 360, Blogger, LiveJournal, Xanga, MSN Spaces, Wordpress and Opera's own community site, My Opera. The company plans to expand Widgetize to support different widgets besides RSS and Atom feed readers.
