Microsoft's IPod Killer Gets Expanded Duties

Microsoft's rumored iPod killer may be much, much, more than that. In addition to its own features, the product, codenamed Argo, could be part of a larger line of "Xbox-branded digital-media products" in the works.

And it's possible it won't make it out by Christmas, as earlier reports indicated.

Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times broke this news thanks to "some research, reporting and information from a source close to the project."

He indicated that Microsoft is developing a series of products, including a "device that plays media, a software media player and an online media service."

Dudley's report reiterated that Microsoft assigned J. Allard (of Xbox fame) to the project, and also claimed that the company "has committed hundreds of millions to produce and market the devices."

Allard's involvement indicated that Argo is meant to be something really special.

"This is more than just another MP3 player," Dudley confirmed. "It will also compete with game players from Sony and Nintendo that have long had Wi-Fi and work as media players, Internet terminals and communication devices."

But not everything is idyllic at Microsoft. "It's a grand plan, but as with a few other big projects in Redmond, it may be a struggle to get it all done by the end of 2006," Dudley wrote. "The project isn't completed yet, the holidays are approaching fast and the team is under intense pressure to get everything absolutely right."

Microsoft has disappointed many consumers, investors, and businesses with its delays of Vista and Office.

Delaying something else would not be at all good for the company. Argo sounds very promising, and hopefully it'll smooth sailing for this product.
